1965
According to Wrestling Revue (Oct. 1980), the Kelly Twins began training with Chris & John Tolos at age 16. They worked out at Jack Wentworth’s Gym and may made their debut as a version of The Scufflin Hillbillies around 1965. Wrestling Revue’s Gary Woronchak claims they were born in Atlanta, GA while SLAM! Wrestling lists their birthplace as Kirkland Lake, ON. The brothers were featured in several wrestling magazines over the years. As of 1980, the Kellys were claimed to have wrestled “in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere”.

Wrestle in ring, not with the fans
(Edmonton Journal, Wednesday, January 22, 1975)
Five professional wrestlers have been reprimanded by the Edmonton Boxing and Wrestling Commission.

Ald. Ron Hayter, commission chairman, said King Curtiss, Big John Quinn, Larry Lane and Mike Lewin were rapped for brawling outside the ring and among the spectators. “Under such circumstances, crowd control is difficult and the safety of fans is endangered,” he explained.

Mike Kelly, of the Kelly Twins tag team, received a reprimand for striking a fan who was attempting to enter the ring during last Saturday’s card in the Sales Pavilion.

Tag team crown mat card feature
(The Life, Wednesday, September 30, 1981)
One of the greatest tag-team combinations on the current wrestling scene, Yukon Moose Cholak and Spike Huber, are looking forward to their World Tag-Team title showdown with the Kelly Twins of Canada, Oct. 9 in Cicero Stadium, 1909 Laramie Avenue for the benefit of The Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Huber, who with then partner Wilbur Snyder, lost the WWA title to these same Kelly Twins last August in Indianapolis, is quick to explain why he thinks he has the right partner to upset the current titleholders: “Cholak has the size and the power to compliment my speed and scientific abilities,” reasons Huber. “Cholak is a mauler, a brawler type just like the Kelly Twins. Pat and Mike Kelly are big boys, both standing over six feet six inches and weighing about 281 pounds apiece, a total weight package of almost 600 pounds! I need some kind of weight advantage factor to overcome this difference. Cholak is the answer at 325. He’s huge! And more than that, he’s quick, strong and plenty rough. I don’t see how we can lose.”

The fur starts a-flying after the bout is over
By RICHARD D. WALTON
(Indianapolis Star, Monday, January 18, 1982)
The main bout on the professional wrestling card at Market Square Arena left at least four injured, had fans fuming and didn’t occur in the ring.

The trouble started when Pat and Mike Kelly, 250-pound twin “bad guys” on the professional wrestling circuit, lost the final match of Saturday night’s program to Dick the Bruiser and Spike Huber.

Spectators, many already jamming the aisles to cheer the demise of the Kellys, crowded near the ring as the twins climbed out.

Moments later, according to witnesses, the Kellys chased a spectator through the hostile throng, knocked him down in the stands and pummeled him before heading to the dressing room.

BESIDES THIS spectator, at least two others were knocked down in the melee, and the Kellys themselves claim to have been injured by irate fans. Exactly how and why this all happened was not clear Sunday, but several fans accused police of allowing the incident to get out of hand.

“Police had nothing under control,” said wrestling fan Clifford T. Bellis. “It was like a wild riot. People in the crowd acted like there was an explosion or something.

“Even if provoked, a professional athlete has no business going up in the crowd.”

ACCOUNTS OF the incident varied. The pursued spectator, Danny L. Keller, 29, 2020 West New York Street, had a ringside seat for the match. As the wrestlers left the ring, he said, “somebody threw a beer at the Kelly twins.”

Keller said the brothers, apparently irate after losing their match, thought he had thrown the beer and chased him into the stands.

Keller said they inflicted eye and rib injuries that required treatment at Wishard Memorial Hospital. The wrestlers’ gave a different version of the incident.

“WE HAD JUST left the ring and the police weren’t there (to shield us from the crowd),” Pat Kelly said. “One flyin’ over guy suckered my brother (punched him in the face).”
Kelly said the blow chipped one of his brother’s teeth and loosened others.

Kelly said the chase was a short one.

“My brother tripped the guy and punched him a couple of times. Then we left.”

“We were just trying to protect ourselves,” he said. “We didn’t want to hurt nobody.”

THE WRESTLERS said they did not hurt the fan seriously and claimed they suffered bumps on their heads from fans who struck them as they made their way to the dressing room. “People were punching us all the way back to the dressing room,” Kelly said. “They were punching the police, too.”

Police said their main concern was calming the crowd and attending to the injured, including an unidentified woman who was knocked unconscious and carried from the arena on a stretcher.

Police said she regained consciousness before being taken from the arena.

No charges had been filed as of late Sunday. Police said an investigation of the incident is under way.
