Zack is on track. Zack Gibson has won the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament and will face the champion, Pete Dunne, tomorrow night. Gibson defeated fellow finalist Travis Banks to become the number one contender.
In the tournament, Gibson made Amir Jordan, Gentleman Jack Gallagher, Flash Morgan Webster and eventually Travis Banks all submit to his Shankly Gates, a modified grounded wrist lock.
Travis Banks entered the match with a taped, injured shoulder. At the end of his qualifying match with Joe Coffey earlier in the evening Coffey attacked Banks hurling him into the steel post. Banks spent a lot of the match protecting his shoulder from Gibson’s focused attacks.
Banks was blocked when he attempted a tope suicida. Gibson threw him back into the ring and drilled him with his Helter Skelter (corkscrew cradle brainbuster) for a two count. Gibson slapped on Shankly Gates and Banks couldn’t escape.
As Gibson had his hand raised in victory by Shawn Michaels, Triple H and UK General Manager Johnny Saint, WWE United Kingdom Champion, Pete Dunne, came down to the ring holding up the belt in front of Gibson, taunting him.
Also on night one of the card, the outstanding Toni Storm – who the WWE should have signed after last year’s WWE Mae Young Classic – beat Killer Kelly and Isla Dawn to win a triple threat match to determine the number one contender to the NXT Women’s Championship. Storm will take on the reigning champion, Shayna Baszler, also on night two of the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament.
The match itself was very strong but the women weren’t given enough time with only about seven minutes to really shine. Storm pinned Isla Dawn with her Air Raid Crash and Storm Zero finishers.
