Jay Reso, known to wrestling fans as Christian, is gone from World Wrestling Entertainment.

WWE.com reported Monday that Christian, who was assigned to the Smackdown! brand, quit the promotion.

The Orangeville, Ontario native worked the Smackdown! taping Sunday night in Los Angeles, teaming with JBL against Matt Hardy & Rey Mysterio.

The Wrestling Observer‘s Dave Meltzer is reporting that Christian’s contract was up, that he was offered a new deal, and turned it down.

Christian, 31, debuted in the WWE in September 1998 at the Breakdown pay-per-view in Hamilton, Ontario, where he came out during Edge’s match with Owen Hart.

In his first major match in WWE, he won the Light Heavyweight title, defeating Taka Michinoku at Judgment Day 1998. Initially, Christian feuded with his “brother” Edge (real-life best friend Adam Copeland from Orangeville) but before too long, the pair was reunited and joined with Gangrel to form “The Brood”.

Earlier in 2005, Christian appeared on the brink of main-event status, with his catchphrases to his “peeps” getting him over like never before. However, a switch to the Smackdown! brand from Raw was a demotion of sorts for Reso, and though given his own in-ring talk show, The Peep Show, he never seemed on an upward trajectory again.
