Although he didn’t actually defeat Cody Rhodes on Saturday Night’s Main Event, Kevin Owens is declaring himself the “new” and “true” WWE Champion.

Kevin Owens lost the match over the weekend that was filled with referee bumps and “injuries”. During one of those incidences Owens did pin Rhodes but there was no  conscious, active official to slap a three count to make it official. Rhodes won by hitting the Cross Rhodes on Owens and a steel chair Owens had brought into the ring himself.

After the match Owens attacked Rhodes, injured him with a piledriver and fled the scene with the Winged Eagle WWE Championship. That belt was on loan to Cody Rhodes from HHH for one night only. That championship belt was last won by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin at WrestleMania XIV when he defeated Shawn Michaels. That belt was then retired and replaced by the “Attitude Era” belt design.

Owens made his bold claim today on X:

BALLZ!!!

Now that I have your attention, I have great news for you all!

I am proud to officially announce that I will be competing in my first matches as your new, true WWE Champion on this year’s Holiday loop (that’s a term people in “the business” use that refers to a string of consecutive shows in different cities over a short period of time) starting in Jacksonville on the 26th, followed by 3 more shows in Florida and then one in Detroit for some reason.

Be there to witness history!

Oh, the Raw crew has shows too. Whatever.

As part of the storyline the WWE has stated that Rhodes has suffered a “cervical swelling and was kept overnight at a local hospital for observation. While X-Rays were negative for a fracture, Rhodes has been officially diagnosed with axial compression of the cervical spine, as well as a cervical strain with spasm.”
