Sep 21, 2017: Pentagon and Son of Havoc climb ladder for Gift of the Gods

By NOLAN HOWELL

With four weeks of Ultima Lucha Tres starting next week, a Gift of the Gods Champion was decided this week to set the next Lucha Underground Champion contender before the big event. The Rabbit Tribe, Drago, Cortez Castro, Pentagon Dark, and Son of Havoc faced off after turning in their Aztec Medallions to earn a shot at the The Temple’s biggest title.

Pentagon and Son of Havoc were left against The Rabbit Tribe after the match broke down and it would prove to be a close finish. Saltador and Paul London looked to take out Pentagon, but both were taken out by the package piledriver. Mala Suerte was taken out after Pentagon fought off The Rabbit Tribe and Son of Havoc capitalized with a shooting star press. Both London and Suerte were covered when the referee counted to three and Pentagon and Havoc were both winners. Lucha Underground owner Dario Cueto settled things when he booked the two for a ladder match at Ultima Lucha Tres.

In the co-main event, Fenix and Melissa Santos put their romance to the test against the siblings Marty “The Moth” Martinez and Mariposa. Santos and Fenix trained intimately to start the show, but it was not enough to get the win. Fenix started even with Mariposa before Martinez was able to work him down. Fenix fought out of the corner and got the tag to Santos. Santos was able to hit Martinez with a kick and Fenix looked to finish the match, but Mariposa crotched him to send him to the floor. Santos got distracted as Fenix was tied to the ropes and was spiked to the mat for the brother and sister to get the win. Martinez tried to take some of Santos’s hair with him, but Fenix was able to chase him off before any damage could be done.

In the opening match, Dante Fox took on Texano with Famous B filling in as the night’s ring announcer with Santos competing. Fox was able to take it to Texano early with a dive, but Texano was able to use his power advantage to negate the speed as they went back and forth. The end came when Texano countered a Fox Catcher for a nearfall and Famous B announced Texano as the winner to distract him. Fox rolled Texano up and got the win. Texano went after Famous B post-match, but Dario Cueto came out with an announcement that the two will face each other at Ultima Lucha and Famous B will get Texano’s contract if he wins.

The show closed with Cueto meeting a mystery associate in a limo and he brought the gauntlet with him. Cueto said that Mil Muertes or Jeremiah Crane would be good hosts for the gauntlet and booked them and Cage to a three-way match for the gauntlet and told the mystery associate he could take out Cage himself if he won it back. The associate puffed a cigar approvingly to end the show.

Ultima Lucha Tres begins next week and features four weeks of action, culminating in an LU title match between champion Johnny Mundo and challenger Prince Puma.

Sep 14, 2017: Mantanza gets Cueto family revenge over Mysterio

By NOLAN HOWELL

Lucha Underground owner Dario Cueto’s interference in Rey Mysterio’s Lucha Underground Championship match against Johnny Mundo cost the challenger a victory, but he took a 619 and was embarrassed in the process. Cueto now wants revenge and sent his brother, “The Monster” Matanza Cueto, to settle the score against Mysterio in the 100th edition of Lucha Underground this week.

Mysterio was able to take advantage early by using his quickness and sent Matanza outside, but Matanza slammed him on the floor and against the barricade to take control back inside before throwing him back out to work him some more. Matanza got Mysterio up top inside and Mysterio bit the hand to land a sunset flip powerbomb to start his comeback. Sentons and a DDT got nearfalls for Mysterio and he dropkicked a chair back into Matanza’s face before connecting on a 619 with the chair. Matanza had enough as he took the chair to Mysterio’s knee and landed throws. Though he missed a corner tackle, he caught Mysterio off a moonsault attempt and landed Wrath of the Gods. Dario Cueto knocked Mysterio’s foot off the bottom rope and the Cuetos got their revenge, but it wasn’t over yet.

After the match, Mysterio got hit with another Wrath of the Gods and had a chair racked around his neck before getting tossed into the ring post with it. Mysterio was carried out by Matanza as he followed Dario out of The Temple to end the show.

Ricky Mandel changed his name to Ricky Mundo, but he was told to sit this match out and change his name by Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo as The Worldwide Underground took on Prince Puma, Cage, Sexy Star, and Fenix. Mundo announced Marty “The Moth” Martinez as their partner against Fenix, but Martinez was worked over by Sexy Star to start. PJ Black and Fenix took each other on before Cage and Taya were brought in and things started to break down as Jeremiah Crane stole the gauntlet from Cage. Prince Puma made the hot tag, but was left inside with Black and Mundo and Mundo hit the End of the World for the win.

While Martinez was taken out by Fenix after the match as he went after Melissa Santos again, a brawl broke out in the locker room as Crane delivered the gauntlet to Catrina. Mil Muertes took out Crane and Cage came back looking for his gauntlet, with the three brawling and Dario Cueto decided to sneak in and pick up the scraps to take the gauntlet unnoticed.

With an Aztec Medallion on the line, Pentagon Dark took on Dragon Azteca Jr. Pentagon worked the leg kicks early and had the striking advantage before it went outside and Dragon landed a corkscrew off the top. Pentagon sent him into the barrier wall outside and Dragon came back with a hurricanrana. The back-and-forth continued inside with DDTs traded until Pentagon was able to land a backbreaker and set up for the running package piledriver for the win. Pentagon looked to snap the arm, but Matanza was sent in to beat down Dragon Azteca before the main event.

Announced for Ultima Lucha Tres was a last luchadora standing match between Taya and Sexy Star, while next week will feature Fenix and Melissa Santos against Marty “The Moth” Martinez and Mariposa.

Sep 7, 2017: Puma puts career against Mundo’s title at Ultima Lucha

By NOLAN HOWELL

With Ultima Lucha Tres in three weeks and the 100th episode of Lucha Underground next week, things are shaping up and owner Dario Cueto has more in store as more Aztec Medallions were handed out this week as well as an announcement for next week that could have major implications on the main event of Ultima Lucha Tres.

Prince Puma came out at the end of the show to address the crowd before he takes on Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo at Ultima Lucha, but the champion was there to cut him off. Mundo challenged Puma to a title vs. mask match, but Dario Cueto was there to remind them that there is already a mask vs. hair match for Ultima Lucha Tres and suggests title vs. career. Puma takes it to Mundo and raises the LU title to accept the challenge as the show closes.

Earlier in the show, Cueto announced in the ring a match that involved Puma and Mundo as the 100th episode of LU will feature The Worldwide Underground of Mundo, Taya, PJ Black, and Ricky Mandel against Prince Puma and a team yet to be announced, with Pentagon Dark and El Dragon Azteca Jr. facing off for an Azteca Medallion. His brother Matanza will take on Rey Mysterio in the main event. Mysterio came out after Cueto called and Cueto told Mysterio he will need to leave the building as Matanza faces The Rabbit Tribe tonight. Mysterio refused and Cueto threatened Mysterio with the firing of Dragon Azteca Jr., so Mysterio left only after saying he will destroy the Cueto family next week.

Matanza took on The Rabbit Tribe in the main event and even though the tribe had numbers and were able to land superkicks to put Matanza down for a shooting star press from leader Paul London, Matanza would put them all down and finish Saltador with a Wrath of the Gods in the middle of the ring to take the victory in his return.

The Mack took on Drago with an Aztec Medallion on the line in the opener and it was Kobra Moon who would help her stablemate get the win as she hopped on the apron when Mack was starting a comeback out of the corner, allowing Drago to land kicks and get the Dragon’s Tail for the victory. Mack hit Drago with a Stunner after the match and was beaten down and left in the ring by Kobra Moon’s tribe in retaliation.

In the 5-0 Street Fight for the Aztec Medallion. police cars and SWAT teams surrounded the ring as Cortez Castro took on Joey Ryan. Ryan was stopped by the SWAT team from escaping as Castro chased him down. Castro cornered Ryan in the ring, but Ryan attacked with a SWAT shield and handcuffs and did a cavity search with a rubber glove. Ryan took control as he threw Castro into the SWAT team outside and took SWAT shields inside, but Castro slammed him off a car. Ryan returned the favor with a uranage on the car hood and they fought to a table with coffee and donuts, where Ryan had coffee poured down his trunks and was hit with a taser below the belt. Inside, Castro took advantage with mace and landed a piledriver to get the win.

The 100th edition of Lucha Underground next week features Rey Mysterio vs. Matanza Cueto and The Worldwide Underground taking on Prince Puma and his team as the road to Ultima Lucha Tres gets shorter and shorter with only three weeks remaining.

Aug 31, 2017: Aztec Medallions handed out for Ultima Lucha Tres

By NOLAN HOWELL

After Rey Mysterio failed to capture the Lucha Underground Championship from Johnny Mundo with interference from Lucha Underground owner Dario Cueto, Cueto now has some ideas for the revenge-minded Mysterio with only four weeks until Ultima Lucha Tres. What does the owner and proprietor of The Temple have in store for the former challenger after he hit Cueto with a 619 last week in the title match?

Cueto kicked off the show this week visiting his brother Matanza and said that after the embarrassment Mysterio caused him last week, Mysterio will rematch Matanza in two weeks on the 100th episode of Lucha Underground.

The main event featured Son of Havoc taking on Son of Madness in a Biker’s Brawl Aztec Medallion match. Son of Madness kicked off the show against Mascarita Sagrada and winning easily, but beating down Havoc’s friend after the match and forcing Havoc to make the save. Cueto booked the two for the main event, where the two went at it from the opening bell and fought into the crowd outside the ring. Madness was unable to finish Havoc inside and brought out a beer bottle and hammer from under the ring, looking to bash Havoc to get the win. Havoc ducked a shot from the hammer and landed a beer bottle across the head to set up the shooting star press for the win and the Aztec Medallion, joining The White Rabbit Tribe in the Gift of the Gods title match at Ultima Lucha Tres.

Sexy Star took on Joey Ryan in a match that featured more outside interference than in-ring action as Taya came out during the match with a sign mocking Sexy Star. Sexy would take the bait and take out Taya outside before running into a superkick from Ryan back inside that would give him the win. Ryan attempted to give Sexy his lollipop post-match, but was taken out by Cortez Castro after Ryan attacked him last week. Castro met with Dario Cueto after the match and threatened him with arrest, but Cueto tempted him with an Aztec Medallion match against Ryan next week and Castro accepted.

Marty “The Moth” Martinez” faced Argenis and beat him down with the help of his sister Mariposa, as she ran Argenis into the ring post and bloodied him before giving Martinez the win. “Moth” had an ulterior motive as he unmasked Argenis and threw it at his love (un)interest Melissa Santos at ringside. Martinez wants Fenix’s mask at Ultima Lucha Tres and it sets up a mask vs. hair match at the season finale event.

Things are shaping up for the four-night finale of Ultima Lucha Tres in four weeks, with a final night main event of Johnny Mundo vs. Prince Puma.

Aug 3, 2017: Mundo makes it personal in attack on Mysterio’s son

By NOLAN HOWELL

Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo defends his title against Rey Mysterio in a few short weeks in what is shaping up to be the biggest world title match in Lucha Underground history. After Mysterio defeated Mundo’s Worldwide Underground partner PJ Black last week, Mundo got Mysterio’s pupil El Dragon Azteca Jr. in the main event this week as things got even more heated.

Early in the show, Dario Cueto summoned Mundo’s Worldwide Underground into his office and promised them more opportunities despite them failing. They would make their presence felt after the main event. Mundo toyed with Dragon early on and grounded him with a slam on the floor as Dragon tried to get back into the match using his lucha libre. Dragon fought back with a powerbomb from the top and the two remained equal down the stretch. Dragon looked to finish Mundo and nearly had him down for the count a couple of times until Mundo was able to drop him and land the End of the World to take home the victory.

The win wasn’t enough for Mundo though as he grabbed a steel chair and went after Dragon. With his family watching at ringside, Rey Mysterio ran out to make the save and chased Mundo off…for the moment. Mysterio celebrated with his family at ringside and Mundo returned to confront Mysterio in front of his family. Dominic Mysterio stepped up to Mundo and the Worldwide Underground grabbed Rey Mysterio. Mundo looked to hit Rey with the belt, but attacked Dominic instead with the Lucha Underground Championship to end the show.

The show started with Lucha Underground owner Dario Cueto visiting his brother Matanza in his cell and he warned Matanza to control his hunger before the gods destroy the both of them as he laid out a platter of raw meat before his cell.

The first match featured Fenix taking on Kobra Moon disciple and Trios champion Pindar in the Cueto Cup quarterfinals. Pindar looked to use his size early and kept Fenix grounded. Fenix came back by sending Pindar into the corner and landing a forearm to the back of the head to set up a German suplex that would set up the finish, where Fenix landed a superplex and double knees off the top to move on to the semifinals. At the end of the show, Fenix left with Melissa Santos and Marty “The Moth” Martinez watched them in the parking lot, telling himself Melissa won’t like Fenix when he sees how ugly he is with his mask off.

At the LAPD office, Cortez Castro meets with Captain Vasquez and Vasquez wanted to know why Castro won’t arrest Cage for the murder of Councilman Delgado. Castro said Vasquez wants Cage’s gauntlet and said no man alive could take it as he walked out. Vasquez pulled out the other half of the Aztec medallion that is shared with Catrina and said he maybe was right.

In the other quarterfinal match of the night, Dante Fox took on Prince Puma in a match that was contested in the air as both were sent out for suicide dives early and Fox landed a tornado DDT off a shooting star press attempt outside. Fox gained control inside and wore down Puma before Puma fought up for the short-lived comeback that saw Fox put him back down with a suplex. A 450 landing on the knees for Fox would spell the end as Puma unloaded on him and landed a running dropkick that bounced him out of the corner and set up the 630 splash off the top to send Puma into the semifinals.

Lucha Underground returns next week with the culmination of the Cueto Cup quarterfinals and the fallout from Johnny Mundo’s attack on Dominic Mysterio, plus we figure out what unique opportunities are in store for Worldwide Underground.

Jul 20, 2017: Prince Puma fades PJ Black in Cueto Cup

By NOLAN HOWELL

After Worldwide Underground’s PJ Black defeated Sexy Star in the first round of the Cueto Cup with a little help from Taya and Prince Puma defeated another Worldwide member and Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo’s fanboy Ricky Mandel, the two were set to take the main event this week in the second round of the tournament that could see them facing off with the winner of Mundo and Rey Mysterio.

Puma is shown having visions on the roof to start the show, when Vampiro comes up and tells him that the only way to silence it all is to win back the Lucha Underground Championship. PJ Black sees Puma on the roof and gives him the one-finger salute, which makes Puma says he will not lose to Black no matter what. Black would later get introduced to his and Worldwide Underground’s new agent, Benjamin Cooke, by champion Johnny Mundo and crew. While Cooke couldn’t get Mundo’s name right and seemed inept, he promised Worldwide Underground would own Lucha Underground with him as their agent.

In the main event, Black and Puma went all out with Puma laying into Black early, but both men rallying with exchanges of moves. Black landed a spike hurricanrana into the corner to take control, but Puma fought back and punctuated with a standing shooting star press. Puma laned a suplex and cutter combination, but Black came back with a front suplex. Both men fought up top and Puma landed both a reverse hurricanrana and Frankensteiner, but Black survived. Puma decided to put Black away with running boots that knocked him down for the 630 splash. Puma advanced, but Lucha Underground owner Dario Cueto informed Black that his agent Benjamin Cooke scored him a match with Rey Mysterio next week.

Cage and Pindar opened the night in a quick one as referee Justin Borden tried to get Cage’s gauntlet off before the match. Cage laid him out and tried to finish Pindar, but Borden disqualified him and it earned Borden another beating after the match. Pindar advances, but Cage continues to look unstoppable with the gauntlet quite literally at his hand.

In the other match of the night, Dante Fox was set to take on Son of Havoc. Son of Havoc was attacked on the way to the ring by Son of Madness and hit with a chain. Dario Cueto came out of his office and said he cannot postpone a match in the Cueto Cup and challenged Son of Havoc to get to the ring and gave him an option to quit. Havoc didn’t quit and took a beating for it for the majority of the match, but he fought back towards the end. A Death Valley Driver landed off the apron to the floor for Havoc and he went up top for the finish, but Fox avoided it to land a Fox Catcher and secure his spot in the second round.

Lucha Underground next week features the end of the second round of the Cueto Cup, with Drago vs. Pentagon Dark and The Mack vs. Texano as well as PJ Black looking to soften up Lucha Underground Championship number one contender Rey Mysterio for his Worldwide Underground stablemate Johnny Mundo.

Jul 6, 2017: Puma, Fox, Black, and Son of Havoc advance in Cup

By NOLAN HOWELL

The final night of the first round of the Cueto Cup was upon us this week on Lucha Underground as we edge closer to crowning a number one contender for the Lucha Underground Championship at Ultima Lucha Tres, with the winner taking on either current champion Johnny Mundo or his challenger Rey Mysterio after they square off on the night of the Cueto Cup final!

This week featured a main event between Dante Fox and Mysterio’s protege, El Dragon Azteca Jr. Fox’s backstory as a POW and his rivalry with Killshot opened the show to give some context behind the man in the main event. The two went back and forth early in the air as they demonstrated their lucha abilities, but Fox was able to gain the upper hand inside and ground Azteca. Azteca fought his way back up and evened the score a bit, but an exchange of dropkicks saw Azteca call for Rey Mysterio at ringside and that’s when all hell broke loose courtesy of Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo’s Worldwide Underground. Taya, Ricky Mandel, and “The Darewolf” PJ Black all came after Mysterio and were taken care of before Mundo powerbombed him on the apron. Azteca made the save as the group pummeled Mysterio, but he was sent inside to a Fox Catcher from Fox that would send him into the next round and leave Worldwide Underground celebrating.

The rest of Worldwide Underground saw action earlier in the night as well, to varying degrees of success. PJ Black opened the night against Sexy Star. Black used the power advantage early as he laid a beating on Sexy, but Sexy was able to turn the tide after they fought at ringside and she landed a crossbody. This brought Taya to come out and interfere in the match, with the deciding blow being struck as she tossed a pair of brass knuckles that were caught by Sexy and used to knock Black out. The referee caught Sexy in the act and disqualified her, prompting Sexy to take matters into her own hands and deck the referee after the match.

Black would face the winner of Prince Puma and Ricky Mandel, Mundo’s biggest fan. The match would end quickly as Mandel seemed more interested in parroting his idol’s talk about “Slam Town” and he got caught with a kick that would set up a spinning piledriver from Puma for the win.

In the match hyped last week at the closing of the show, Son of Havoc took on Son of Madness in a match with some unwritten history to it as Havoc was shocked to figure out his opponent. The two brawled around ringside early and often, with Madness displaying a similar style that saw him land a suicide dive through the corner on Havoc outside. It was even all the way to the end as they exchanged cradles, but it would end up with Madness’s shoulders on the mat for Havoc to advance to the second round. Post-match, Madness laid out Havoc and tore his leather vest to further fuel the flames of the unknown story between the two.

In addition to more previews for the Lucha Underground title match between Mundo and Mysterio, commentators Matt Striker and Vampiro revealed some of the second round matches as next week will feature Taya taking on Jeremiah Crane, Paul London against Mil Muertes, and Fenix looking to continue his run in the Cueto Cup for ring announcer Melissa Santos against her stalker Marty “The Moth” Martinez.

The second round kicks off next week on Lucha Underground!

Jun 22, 2017: Fenix clips Mariposa’s wings in Cueto Cup

By NOLAN HOWELL

Last week, Lucha Underground kicked off the Cueto Cup.tournament devised by owner Dario Cueto. The winner of the 32-man tournament will earn the trophy, but also get a title shot at Ultima Lucha Tres against the winner of a match between Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo and challenger Rey Mysterio. The main attraction of the first round this week featured Fenix taking on Mariposa.

Fenix kicked off the show entering The Temple and greeting ring announcer Melissa Santos, dedicating his performance in the Cueto Cup to her as the two seem to have sparks. Perhaps Marty “The Moth” Martinez picked up on those sparks as he lurked in the background with his eyes as always on Santos.

Fenix didn’t take Mariposa seriously in the main event and it almost cost him as he seemed reluctant to throw his hardest against a luchadora. A tornado DDT from Mariposa changed his mind as she threw him outside and took control from there. Fenix was able to use his strength advantage momentarily back inside before Mariposa started getting momentum back with counters. Fenix changed that with an enzuigiri that sent her to the floor. This lead to a fight on the top rope and Mariposa was caught by the Fenix Driver. While Fenix advanced, Marty “The Moth” Martinez and Mariposa laid a beating on Fenix after the match as Melissa Santos was forced to watch on from ringside.

This wasn’t all “Moth” had to do with Santos this week though as he was shown in his hideout adding another picture of her to his shrine and kissing on the photos of her. Mariposa threatened her brother by saying the obsession was making him weak and said that she will teach him a lesson in the next round of the Cueto Cup. Marty reminded her of how they used to play when they were kids, but told Melissa in the pictures not to worry because she’d be family soon.

Mariposa wasn’t able to keep up her end of the bargain, but Martinez was able to advance against The Rabbit Tribe’s Saltador. When he wasn’t fixated on Santos at ringside, “Moth” used his power advantage against the high-flying of Saltador. Martinez’s mind games got him into trouble as he spat at a referee and Saltador almost mounted a comeback, but got dropped by a butterfly gutbuster that got one half of the Moth family a victory this week.

Speaking of The Rabbit Tribe, they continued to try to follow Mascarita Sagrada as their leader and Mascarita keeps blowing them off. Mascarita probably could have used their help against Pindar, one of Kobra Moon’s disciples. The monster was simply too big for Mascarita to get close to winning, despite the lucha of Mascarita having success.

After killing Councilman Delgado in his office last week by crushing his head with the power of the gauntlet, it was little doubt what Cage was going to do to frequent Temple bathroom visitor Vinnie Massaro. While Massaro acquitted himself well with an STO that nearly put the machine away, he tried to get the gauntlet away from Cage and that spelled his end as Cage hit him with a brainbuster. The most significant moments came after the match however as Cage busted Massaro open with the gauntlet and chokeslammed him off the apron to the floor.

A video package continued to preview the training and build-up to the Lucha Underground title match between Mundo and Mysterio as we continue to approach the match and get closer to earning a number-one contender through the Cueto Cup tournament.
