Lucha Underground ran for four seasons, starting in 2014 and finishing in 2018. In retrospect, the show that aired in English on El Rey Network and in Spanish on UniMás was far more influential than many thought. Some of its impact on pro wrestling includes:
- Many of its stars went on to greater heights
- Some of the top luchadors and luchadoras gained an international following
- Accepting that pro wrestling was scripted, and truly making it a soap opera
- Top-notch backstage skits
- It even booked a wedding for Johnny Mundo / John Morrison and Taya Valkyrie … who eventually did get married!
Perhaps that isn’t surprising given that the key players behind the scenes on it were TV producer Mark Burnett (who had created Survivor, The Apprentice, Shark Tank, The Voice, etc.,) and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk till Dawn, Sin City, Machete, Spy Kids).
We have gathered some of our Lucha Underground-specific interviews, and our archive of show coverage below.
