Word is that before Shane McMahon’s not-so secret meeting with AEW’s Tony Khan that he attempted to return to WWE.

The Wrestling Observer reports that McMahon has tried to return to WWE in some capacity but those in charge have rebuffed his efforts.

His discussion with Tony Khan on Monday might be a way for him to leverage or put pressure on those within WWE who turned him away.

McMahon hasn’t appeared on WWE TV since WrestleMania 39.

Speaking to Bully Ray, McMahon released this statement which alluded to family issues: “Tony and I were connected through a mutual friend and we had a great meeting. We talked about many things, but mostly about our shared love for the business and the rewards and challenges of working with family. I congratulated him on the five year anniversary of AEW and look forward to how he evolves the business moving forward.”

As to who that “mutual friend” may be we might have an answer:

 

Mone also wrote in her July newsletter:

“After it all, by only the fates aligned — I walked into the airport, was in line by the bagel shop when I suddenly looked up, and there he was, just as surprised as I was. My first day being a double title holder and the first wrestler and former WWE Superstar I see is [Shane] McMahon … come on, if that isn’t the universe working in divine timing, I don’t know what else it could be. I’ve always loved Shane. When we locked eyes, we both kind of looked at each other like ‘IS THAT YOU?’ Our faces lit up as we got to talking a bit and before he boarded his flight, he gave me his number … the rest as they say [is] history or maybe a mystery!
