Will Swerve survive his first title defense? Will Adam Copeland survive his Barbed Wire Steel Cage match against Malakai Black? Here are our predictions and prognostications for Double or Nothing 2024.
Roderick Strong (c) vs. Will Ospreay – AEW International Championship Match
Name | Prediction | Winner |
---|---|---|
John Powell | Ospreay wins because like all the other factions in AEW nobody cares about the Undisputed Kingdom and nor should they. Their booking has been bungled. | Will Ospreay |
Jonathan Schwartz | Ospreay. Tony Khan loves debuting legends from other promotions and sticking them with secondary titles. Done right this match also teases a war between Undisputed Kingdom and the Don Callis Family. I feel like Ospreay should be split off from Callis but he keeps bringing in united Empire guys (Aussie Open, Jeff Cobb) and it would be a shame to waste that like BUllet Club has been squandered. | Will Ospreay |
Matthew Byer | Will Ospreay should be placed into a program that leads to becoming the new AEW World Champion. Unfortunately this is not that program. While the match will have some good wrestling, and Ospreay will win, it feels like a missed opportunity. | Will Ospreay |
Tomas Martinez | This should be a banger of a match, but the buildup is, like the rest of AEW booking these days, meh. Clearly, The Booker Monkeys™ are writing ways to create disinterest in the product, but let’s hope both men can overcome the lame lack of build and prove why they are the best in the business. As for the belt changing hands, I’m calling chicanery from the Undisputed Kingdom to ensure Roddy will keep the strap. | Roderick Strong |
Josh Olsen | Will Ospreay | Will Ospreay |
https://www.betonline.ag/ | Will Ospreay: -1000. Roderick Strong (c): +550 | Will Ospreay |
Bob Kapur | Ospreay is too good to be slumming for a midcard title. So is Roddy, frankly, but they've already painted him into this bad spot and this seems to be his lot in life. As much as this title is beneath him, Ospreay shouldn't lose this one. He wins and holds it until he unifies it with the World Title down the road. | Will Ospreay |
“Timeless” Toni Storm (c) vs. Serena Deeb – AEW Women’s World Championship Match
Name | Prediction | Winner |
---|---|---|
John Powell | Serena is just another name to be fed to Storm and then will likely disappear to the same wasteland where Deonna Purrazzo, Saraya, Britt Baker, Hikaru Shida, Kris Statlander, Mercedes Martinez, Nyla Rose and Taya Valkyrie have been banished to when Tony has finished hot-shotting them and has moved on to the next big signing. | Toni Storm |
Jonathan Schwartz | Storm. She's the best thing going in AEW. Deeb is a very good wrestler but not the face of a company. | Toni Storm |
Matthew Byer | The booking leading up to this match has been confusing. Who is meant to be the heel? Storm will retain her championship, but whether it leads to something better down the road is unknown at this point. | Toni Storm |
Tomas Martinez | The Timeless One has really gotten over with her gimmick to the point that she is now becoming a babyface day by day. Not to take away anything for Deeb, who’s worked her way back to the ring, let along for a title opportunity, but again…The Booker Monkeys™ strike again. Or rather, they didn’t strike and just slapped this together on a wall to see if it sticks. Either way, count on Deeb to go the way of the Vituosa, La Wera Loca, and who knows how many other top women were sacrificed to the altar of “Timeless” Toni Storm. Remember, she didn’t get big…it’s the squared circle spotlight that got smaller. | Toni Storm |
Josh Olsen | Toni Storm | Toni Storm |
https://www.betonline.ag/ | Timeless Toni Storm (c): -700. Serena Deeb: +400. | Timeless Toni Storm |
Bob Kapur | The novelty of Storm hasn't completely leveled off but it's on its way there. They'll run into the ground and THEN take it off her. Meantime, she beats Deeb. | Toni Storm |
Adam Copeland (c) vs. Malakai Black – Barbed Wire Steel Cage, AEW TNT Championship Match
Name | Prediction | Winner |
---|---|---|
John Powell | Adam Copeland really blew it jumping to AEW. Let's hope he is being paid lots of dough and eventually gets that big final match with Christian he is hoping for. Still doesn't seem worth it. Black is probably going to head back to the WWE when his contract is done so Adam wins. | Adam Copeland |
Jonathan Schwartz | Black. What a useless, gory spectacle of a match this will be. Copeland is putting on great matches and leaning into his hardcore site in a way that can't be healthy. I have been a fan of his for his whole career, but I want to see Black take the next step more than I need to see a Copeland run with anything other than a world title. As much as I love Copeland, unless Mick Foley and/or Gangrel appear this feels like a no-win. | Malakai Black |
Matthew Byer | It seems likely that Black is going to win the AEW TNT Title, but will the audience care? | Malakai Black |
Tomas Martinez | This looks like the sleeper match of the night, and I want Crazy Old Copeland to come out a’swinging at Black. No doubt The House of Black will make their presence known in the match, but I expect Copeland to hold his own. As for whether he holds the title? My coin flip says The House wins that night in an upset. | Malakai Black |
Josh Olsen | Adam Copeland | Adam Copeland |
https://www.betonline.ag/ | Adam Copeland (c): -325. Malakai Black: +215. | Adam Copeland |
Bob Kapur | This should be a fun one. It wouldn't surprise me to see Beth Phoenix get involved in this one. And that helps give the edge to Copeland. | Adam Copeland |
Jon Moxley vs. Konosuke Takeshita – IWGP World Heavyweight Championship Eliminator Match
Name | Prediction | Winner |
---|---|---|
John Powell | Takeshita spoke very candidly recently saying his time wrestling in America hasn't been any fun. I bet Okada is thinking the same thing. Those comments will land him in hot water with Khaaaaan. Did I mention that NJPW's decision to put the belt on Moxley was moronic? | Jon Moxley |
Jonathan Schwartz | Moxley. Takeshita has openly complained about his position within AEW, arguing there is a glass ceiling for Asian talent. Unless it's an angle i don't see that endearing him to any office. I find Takeshita bland even with a gifted talker like Callis as his manager. AEW leans heavily on Japanese and Mexican stars, but they often go missing for prolonged periods and are poorly integrated into programs with American (and Canadian) talent. I think availability is part of the issue, and cannot underestimate the language barrier-fans are lazy when it comes to parsing accents even if one speaks perfect English. In any case this match is just kinda there. I'd rather see Ospreay or Jay White in that spot, and have them beat Mox. | Jon Moxley |
Matthew Byer | It is very rare Moxley puts someone over and Takeshita won’t break that trend here. | Jon Moxley |
Tomas Martinez | If Takeshita wins, he will receive a future IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match. I am curious how New Japan is liking their top prize being handled in this way. This is not a dig on Moxley who is a workhorse at this stage in the game. But, is Takeshita ready for this top spot? Again…Booker Monkeys™. Just take it on faith that Takeshita will take a Death Rider. | Jon Moxley |
Josh Olsen | Konosuke Takeshita | Konosuke Takeshita |
https://www.betonline.ag/ | Jon Moxley: -250. Konosuke Takeshita: +170. | Jon Moxley |
Bob Kapur | With the stipulation, it doesn't make sense for Takeshita to lose. I think he wins en route to eventually winning the IWGP title. | Konosuke Takeshita |
Trent Beretta vs. Orange Cassidy
Name | Prediction | Winner |
---|---|---|
John Powell | Never cared about The Best Friends and don't care about them now. Cassidy wins to gain some measure of revenge and then Trent will disappear from TV and still get paid for months. | Orange Cassidy |
Jonathan Schwartz | Cassidy. This is filler. | Orange Cassidy |
Matthew Byer | Orange Cassidy wins in contest that may not generate much crowd reaction. | Orange Cassidy |
Tomas Martinez | My feeling on this feud is…whatever. This could’ve been an email…or an episode of Rampage, for all I care. Until they up the violence to (oh, I dunno) a parking lot brawl, I gotta feeling Cassidy will get the win. Again…whatever. | Orange Cassidy |
Josh Olsen | Orange Cassidy | Orange Cassidy |
https://www.betonline.ag/ | Trent Beretta: -225. Orange Cassidy: +160. | Trent Beretta |
Bob Kapur | Don't care. All OC matches are skippable. | Who cares. |
Chris Jericho (c) (with Big Bill) vs. FTW Contender Series winner – FTW Championship Match
Name | Prediction | Winner |
---|---|---|
John Powell | Remember back in ECW when the FTW belt meant something? Jericho needs to fade away. His time is over. | Hook |
Jonathan Schwartz | Jericho. I may not like Jericho's act any more but I do respect it. | Chris Jericho |
Matthew Byer | Jericho retains the FTW Championship in what will likely be a mess of a match. | Chris Jericho |
Tomas Martinez | Give credit where it’s due: Jericho knows how to make something interesting, like being The Learning Tree and guiding impressionable men like Big Bill (Ricky Starks, we hardly knew ye). Obviously, Hook wants the belt back, but the X-factor here is Shibata going strong style on everyone in the ring. I don’t think this angle is over yet, so expect Jericho to win through The Power of Douchenozzlery™. | Chris Jericho |
Josh Olsen | Hook | Hook |
https://www.betonline.ag/ | Chris Jericho (c): -425. Hook: +275. Katsuyori Shibata: +1200. | Chris Jericho |
Bob Kapur | If this doesn't eventually lead to a Jericho vs Taz match, they've missed a great opportunity. It's probably something people would want to watch more than any Shibata match. Dissension between Hook and Shibata lead to Jericho stealing a win. | Chris Jericho |
Willow Nightingale (c) vs. Mercedes Moné – AEW TBS Championship Match
Name | Prediction | Winner |
---|---|---|
John Powell | Mone's time in AEW has been an utter disaster for her status and profile. Like Deonna Purrazzo, Saraya, etc, she is just someone in the mix. She will definitely win here but nobody will care because they haven't been inspired to care. | Mercedes Mone |
Jonathan Schwartz | Mone. Khan didn't pay Mone megabucks to job her out in her first match. Which is a shame. Nightengale really isn't ready for primetime. Her delivery comes across as indyriffic to me but it still reads as more credible than anything Mone has said in any role in any company. I have never understood the hype that she receives, but that train has left the station. | Mercedes Mone |
Matthew Byer | The poor reaction that Moné has gotten since arriving in AEW should mean that Nightingale retains the AEW TBS Title. Yet, that is just too logical and so of course Moné wins and becomes the new AEW TBS Champion. | Mercedes Mone |
Tomas Martinez | A match months in the making. Moné was supposed to be the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women’s champ but due to an accident, Nightingale got the win. Her star has been shining in AEW, and The CEO of AEW wants to show her why she’s the boss (I’m writing it this way so that I don’t get a copyright suit by some promotion around Stamford. *ahem*) I’m gonna say Moné will get the title to give Nightingale something to chase this summer. | Mercedes Mone |
Josh Olsen | Mercedes Mone | Mercedes Mone |
https://www.betonline.ag/ | Mercedes Mone: -400. Willow Nightingale (c): +250. | Mercedes Mone |
Bob Kapur | This will be the first test to see if TK gets his money's worth with Mercedes. That starts with her winning here. | Mercedes Mone |
The Elite vs. Team AEW (Bryan Danielson, Cash Wheeler, Dax Harwood and Darby Allin) – Anarchy in the Arena Match
Name | Prediction | Winner |
---|---|---|
John Powell | I would ask why Danielson, a member of the BCC is on Team AEW but that would be asking for booking logic from AEW. The Elite need to win here otherwise they are lame ducks, which they are in the ratings, but that is besides the point. | The Elite |
Jonathan Schwartz | The Elite. Can I just point out that since the Elite include office while Team AEW are just a bunch of independent contractors who could just as easily go work a GCW show tomorrow, the Elite 'actually' represent AEW more than Team AEW? Sorry. Just had an attack of logic. The Elite's opponents are thrown together midcarders-including Danielson at this point of his career. Nothing wrong with that, but for a match that has historically featured all out war between two hot factions, this leaves me flat. Assuming he's relatively healthy Darby Allin is there to take the Sammy Guevara bump, maybe through real glass supplied by Perry. | The Elite |
Matthew Byer | The Elite will win, but the reaction will mostly be ambivalence and silence. | The Elite |
Tomas Martinez | If any faction has fully embraced The Power of Douchenozzlery, it is The Elite. Whether it is spiking the owner Tony Khan like a football or being jackasses to the whole AEW roster, this has been fun to watch. But FTR, Danielson, and a returning Allin want to set those wrongs right. I gotta feeling The Elite will come out on top, but not without blood being spilled. | The Elite |
Josh Olsen | Team AEW | Team AEW |
https://www.betonline.ag/ | The Elite: -450. Team AEW: +275. | The Elite |
Bob Kapur | Don't care. All YB matches are skippable. Danielson and FTR deserve better | Who cares. |
Swerve Strickland (c) vs. Christian Cage – AEW World Championship Match
Name | Prediction | Winner |
---|---|---|
John Powell | Swerve's big win should have been BIG. Instead he has been buried and pushed to the wayside. I feel awful for Swerve. He has worked extremely hard to get to where he is. The way AEW is booking him as champ just sucks. | Swerve Strickland |
Jonathan Schwartz | Strickland. I wouldn't put it past Khan to come up with a way for Christian to beat Swerve and would almost support it given his incredible promo work. But Strickland should be the linchpin for AEW for the next while and he needs a good run. I'd like to see him beat Christian only to be laid out by a returning Adam Page, who formally joins the Elite as a heel (which in turn sets up tension between Page and Okada over the title down the line). | Swerve Strickland |
Matthew Byer | Strickland’s booking over the last few months hasn’t been the greatest which does create some doubt that he will successfully defend the AEW World Title. Thus, let’s go for the upset with Cage getting the victory to become the new AEW World Champion. | Christian Cage |
Tomas Martinez | This is the one time I want to say to The Booker Monkeys™ on how they handled this angle on having Cage become a contender for the top prize in AEW. I want to say that. But, this match feels flat. Sure, this makes sense on paper, but the execution is like if Cassidy booked it. I hope I’m wrong and hopefully the AEW faithful remind Cage Whose House this is when Strickland retains. | Swerve Strickland |
Josh Olsen | Swerve Strickland | Swerve Strickland |
https://www.betonline.ag/ | Swerve Strickland (c) -1500. Christian Cage - +600. | Swerve Strickland |
Bob Kapur | It's too soon to take the title off of Swerve. After all the bewtdowns he's suffered lately, he needs a big, convincing win here. And he will get it. | Swerve Strickland |
