Komet Kid, the third figure of the first series of KWK Kayfabe Heroes wrestling figures has been released, and like Mantaur and PN News before it, I was generously sent two figures to review for SlamWrestling.net’s Not Another Collectible! section.

A mail day from KWK and Shawn Ng is something I’ve come to look forward to, since I’ve really appreciated the quality of the wrestling figures they’ve made so far, and Komet Kid looked to be another excellent addition to their line of retro-style figures.

Komet Kid is another figure that fits their focus on underappreciated and/or cult figures in wrestling, especially since many wrestling fans might look at Komet Kid and initially think of another name, Max Moon, but Komet Kid was the name he debuted as, before it was changed to Max Moon. The name isn’t as important though, as this figure is ultimately of Paul Diamond (the second one in pro wrestling, the former soccer player named Tom Boric), who in a series of Facebook posts looked to be quite happy with his Komet Kid figure.

I was quite happy, as well, when I recently received two Komet Kid figures in my mail, variants A and B. Like the other figures in the line, variant A comes packaged on a red card and variant B is on blue, and just like before, both figures look great in their box, if not better, with sharp, clear packaging and bubbles.

Komet Kid variant A

Variant A features Komet Kid in his classic blue gear, like he wore in his WWF Superstars debut against Barry Horowitz, and variant B has him in yellow, which helps the figure stand out against the blue card. In addition to that, Shawn Ng explained that Diamond wore the yellow Komet Kid gear when he toured New Japan Pro Wrestling in 1994, after departing the WWF.

Komet Kid variant B

For previous reviews, I chose to keep the A variants of Mantaur and PN News in their boxes, and opened their B variants, but I decided to switch it up this time, and I kept the yellow gear B variant of Max Moon in his box, and opened the blue A variant instead.

Once again, this is a very well-made wrestling figure, and looks and feels like something that could actually be played with, as well as appreciated as a display piece. The design of Komet Kid’s gear is very complicated, with a plethora of intricate lines, geometric shapes, and multiple colors, and the KWK design team deserves kudos on all of the details, especially when you really take a close look and notice how different the two variants are. It’s not just a color switch of blue for yellow, it’s two unique designs, which is something you might not notice on first look.

Each Komet Kid figure comes with a removable jet pack and two gauntlets, which Komet Kid would shoot fireworks out of (in real life), and while the jet pack easily comes off and on over Komet Kid’s head, like Mantaur’s cowl or PN News’ chain, to get the gauntlets on, you have to remove Komet Kid’s hands. Inside the package for Komet Kid, there’s a little piece of paper that recommends running Komet Kid’s hands under warm water to soften the plastic and help avoid unwanted breakage, which made me a little nervous to try, and was partly why I decided to open and try this with variant A (which is a little less rare), in case he lost a hand, but after doing what the directions recommended, Komet Kid’s hands pretty easily popped off, I added the gauntlets, and popped his hands back on. I just hope it works as easily for others as it did for me.

KWK Kayfabe Heroes is three-for-three with its first line of figures. Mantaur, PN News, and Komet Kid are excellent additions to any wrestling figure collection, retro or not, and they seem to be getting better with each subsequent release. While these three figures appear to be sold out, it looks like some variations of their Yoshi Tatsu figure are still available in limited quantities, and you can currently pre-order their La Resistance tag team pack during the month of September.
