AEW Dynamite: Summer Blockbuster continued to build momentum toward AEW Forbidden Door with major tournament developments, championship action, surprise alliances and a huge announcement concerning the future of the AEW World Championship picture.
Jon Moxley survived a bruising Continental Championship defence against Shane Taylor, Swerve Strickland punched his ticket to the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final, and MJF found himself at the centre of multiple confrontations as tensions continued to rise ahead of Forbidden Door. The evening also featured the return of Kevin Knight to television following his betrayal of Darby Allin, a major challenge issued by Shane Taylor Promotions, and confirmation of a blockbuster Twelve Man Steel Cage Match.
Dynamite opened with Tony Schiavone introducing Tommaso Ciampa to the ring. Ciampa immediately confronted Schiavone and demanded that he repeat the comments he made on Collision, in which Schiavone suggested that Jericho was better than him.
Reluctantly, Schiavone complied after Ciampa threatened him.
That brought Jericho to the ring. The confrontation quickly heated up as Ciampa mocked Jericho and accused him of treating everything as a joke. Jericho responded by suggesting Ciampa’s hatred stemmed from the fact that he was not Chris Jericho.
The situation escalated when Jericho repeatedly called him “Tommy,” a nickname that visibly angered Ciampa.
The verbal exchange soon turned physical, with the two men trading punches before security and officials flooded the ring. Despite repeated attempts to separate them, the pair continued fighting both inside the ring and on the entrance ramp before finally being pulled apart.
AEW Continental Title Match: Jon Moxley (c) vs. Shane Taylor
The intensity remained high as Continental Champion Jon Moxley headed directly into battle against Shane Taylor.
The challenger wasted little time taking the fight to the champion, matching Moxley strike for strike in a physical encounter that spilled all over ringside. Moxley launched himself through the ropes with a dive, but Taylor answered by throwing the champion over the barricade and later chokeslamming him through the timekeeper’s table.
Back inside the ring, Taylor controlled large portions of the contest and repeatedly punished Moxley with power offence. Moxley, however, refused to stay down.
As the match entered its closing stages, Moxley targeted Taylor’s arm before landing a Curb Stomp. He quickly transitioned into the Bulldog Choke and forced Taylor to submit.
Winner: Jon Moxley
The celebration was short-lived.
Shane Taylor Promotions immediately attacked Moxley after the match. Carlie Bravo handed Taylor a championship belt, which he used as a weapon before delivering another assault on the champion.
Daniel Garcia rushed to the ring to help, but Capt. Shawn Dean evened the odds. Marina Shafir attempted to intervene, only to be cut off by Trish Adora, who struck her with a kendo stick.
Taylor then added insult to injury with a Frog Splash on the fallen champion.
Don Callis emerged next and promised an important announcement.
Callis introduced Kevin Knight, who addressed his shocking actions at Double or Nothing.
Knight dismissed criticism from fans and defended his decision to align himself with the Don Callis Family. He claimed Callis recognised his star potential and promised that joining the group would elevate him to the top of AEW.
The celebration was interrupted when Darby Allin appeared from behind and smashed a skateboard across Knight’s back. Allin escaped through the crowd before the Don Callis Family could retaliate.
Mark Briscoe vs. Pac
Pac and Mark Briscoe engaged in a hard-hitting contest that featured several momentum swings. Briscoe gained an early advantage with a series of strikes and an elbow drop on the floor, while Pac answered with his trademark aggression and technical precision.
The match built to a frantic finish.
Pac countered Briscoe’s Froggy Bow attempt by getting his knees up and nearly stole the victory with a series of near-falls. Briscoe survived and connected with a devastating J-Driller to score the victory.
Winner: Mark Briscoe
Following the match, Briscoe called out AEW World Champion MJF and demanded a title opportunity.
MJF appeared in the crowd and quickly shut down the idea.
The champion claimed that he alone determined who was worthy of challenging for the AEW World Championship. He mocked Briscoe, ridiculed The Conglomeration and insisted that he was protecting the championship from unworthy challengers.
As MJF continued talking, Jay Lethal, Blake Christian and Lee Johnson blindsided Briscoe.
Briscoe fought back but was overwhelmed by the numbers game until Orange Cassidy, Kyle O’Reilly, Roderick Strong and Tomohiro Ishii stormed the ring to even the odds.
Once order was restored, Briscoe revealed a major piece of news.
He informed MJF that Tony Khan had signed a Twelve-Man Steel Cage Match for Forbidden Door. Briscoe and MJF would captain opposing teams, and if Briscoe’s side emerged victorious, he would earn an AEW World Championship match.
Andrade El Idolo vs. Orange Cassidy
Andrade El Idolo looked to continue climbing the rankings as he faced Orange Cassidy.
The match blended serious competition with moments of comedy, particularly after Andrade stopped to take a selfie with a fan following a suplex on the floor.
Lio Rush then appeared in the crowd and inserted himself into the action by demanding selfies from both competitors, creating distractions that altered the flow of the match.
Once the action returned to the ring, the pace increased dramatically.
Cassidy connected with multiple DDT variations and came close to victory after driving Andrade onto the entrance ramp. Andrade weathered the storm, however, and eventually connected with The Message to score the pinfall.
Winner: Andrade El Idolo
A backstage interview followed the match.
A furious Jon Moxley joined Daniel Garcia and Marina Shafir to issue a challenge to Shane Taylor Promotions. The group officially called for a five-on-five Street Fight on Saturday’s Collision.
Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament Quarter-Final: Maya World vs. Skye Blue
The women’s tournament continued under difficult circumstances.
Commentary informed viewers that Sareee had been removed from the tournament due to a neck injury and was not medically cleared to compete. Maya World, therefore, stepped into the bracket to face Skye Blue.
Blue controlled much of the early action, targeting World’s neck and upper body. World gradually battled back, showcasing her resilience with a series of impressive suplexes and strikes.
Blue appeared on the verge of victory after landing a cutter and several impactful knee strikes, but World found an opening and caught Blue with a sudden roll-up.
Winner: Maya World
Another major development unfolded backstage.
MJF approached Don Callis and offered financial incentives in exchange for members of the Don Callis Family joining his team at Forbidden Door.
Callis agreed.
Kevin Knight was announced as the first member of MJF’s side. In return, Knight demanded a future opportunity for the AEW World Championship.
MJF accepted, but attached a significant condition. If Knight loses, he will never receive another AEW World Championship match.
The segment also featured Andrade confronting Callis and demanding to know when his promised championship opportunity would arrive. Callis assured him that it was coming.
Owen Hart Foundation Men’s Tournament Semi-Final: Swerve Strickland vs. Brody King
The main event saw Swerve Strickland and Brody King battle for a place in the final of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
King immediately established his physical dominance, dragging Strickland around ringside and using his power advantage to control the pace. Prince Nana became involved early, helping create an opening that allowed Strickland to deliver a Swerve Stomp onto a seated King outside the ring.
The match became increasingly physical as it progressed.
King launched Strickland onto the commentary table with a double-arm chokeslam and repeatedly came within seconds of victory. Strickland answered with several House Calls, but King refused to stay down.
Nana became involved once again, distracting King at a crucial moment. When King attempted to continue his assault, Nana struck him with a concealed foreign object while the referee’s attention was diverted.
The opening allowed Strickland to capitalise.
Strickland delivered a piledriver and secured the three-count to advance.
Winner: Swerve Strickland
Following the victory, an updated tournament bracket confirmed that Strickland will face Will Ospreay in the final of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament at Forbidden Door.
As the show came to a close, Strickland and Prince Nana celebrated on the stage while the significance of the upcoming showdown with Ospreay sank in.
With Forbidden Door rapidly approaching, Summer Blockbuster delivered major developments across the board. MJF now finds himself surrounded by enemies, Jon Moxley has a violent Street Fight awaiting him, and Swerve Strickland stands one win away from capturing the Owen Hart Cup and securing a future world title opportunity.
