Fresh reports have provided an update on speculation surrounding CM Punk‘s status in WWE, although neither has confirmed the specifics behind the rumours.
Recent reports have suggested issues between CM Punk and WWE, with one report claiming Punk had requested his release from the company, but both Wrestling Observer and Fightful Select say they have been unable to verify exactly what may have occurred.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote that there have been minor issues involving Punk, adding that he believes they date back to Punk’s loss of the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania.
Fightful Select also addressed the speculation, reporting that it has heard numerous rumours regarding issues involving Punk dating back to WrestleMania. However, the outlet stressed that it has not been able to confirm any specific details and noted that little has changed since its previous report on the situation.
Dave Meltzer Stated That CM Punk Was Originally Scheduled To Face Cody Rhodes At SummerSlam
Dave Meltzer also discussed WWE’s original plans for SummerSlam during Wrestling Observer Radio, claiming CM Punk had been scheduled to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
“The plan was Cody Rhodes defending the title against CM Punk. That absolutely was the plan,” Meltzer said.
According to the report, those plans changed after Sami Zayn captured the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions in June.
Adding further intrigue, Punk is not advertised for tomorrow’s Raw in his hometown of Chicago on WWE’s official website. However, he was included in a promotional post shared by the Allstate Arena advertising the event.
At this stage, neither WWE nor Punk has publicly commented on the reported speculation.
