Former WWE star Dawn Marie has revealed that she initially regretted returning to the company in 2024, even asking WWE never to contact her again after struggling to reconnect with her former wrestling persona.
Dawn Marie returned to WWE after nearly two decades away when she served as the special guest referee for the Hardcore Match between Lola Vice and Jaida Parker at Philadelphia’s 2300 Arena.
Speaking with former WWE star David Otunga on The Wednesday Hang, Marie explained that she was surprised when WWE approached her about returning. By that point, she was working as a nurse and had largely moved on from her wrestling career.
Before accepting the appearance, Marie raised concerns about significant neck damage she had suffered during her wrestling career. WWE assured her that the role would not require any physical involvement. However, Marie struggled when WWE asked her to film a promotional video ahead of the appearance.
“I guess Dawn Marie was still a little angry and bitter,” she said. “It was really hard to reach that person.”
Dawn Marie Asked WWE Never To Call Her Again
Dawn Marie explained that she had left her WWE persona in the “rearview mirror”, making it difficult to reconnect with that part of herself after so many years.
What she expected to be a straightforward promo shoot ended up taking an entire day and left her so frustrated that she contacted “Paul” and asked not to be approached for another WWE appearance.
“Please, if my name ever comes up again, just tell them f***ing no,” Marie recalled. “I don’t ever want to torture myself like this again. Please, no.”
Despite her initial reaction, Marie’s perspective changed once she returned to the 2300 Arena and participated in the show. The former ECW star ultimately came away grateful for the opportunity, describing her return to the venue as a “full circle” moment due to her history with ECW.
Marie said the appearance ultimately provided her with much-needed closure on her wrestling career, despite the emotional difficulties she experienced while preparing for her return.
