Cody Rhodes has hinted that a major character shift could be on the horizon as he approaches WrestleMania 42.
Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, the Undisputed WWE Champion admitted he has begun to reconsider his long-standing stance on staying a babyface, suggesting the idea of a heel turn may no longer be off the table.
“Maybe it’s time for me to change,” Cody Rhodes said. “I’ve been saying for so long, ‘I don’t think I could do heel stuff.’ But after a while, it starts to feel like it’s almost expected… like this guy’s going to lose it at some point.”
Rhodes linked that thinking to the increasing pressure around his title defence against Randy Orton, as well as outside involvement in the storyline, including Pat McAfee. He also reflected on the origins of his “American Nightmare” persona, explaining that it was built by focusing inward rather than comparing himself to others on the roster.
“The moment I stopped looking at the rest of the roster… and just focused on being the best me, that’s where the whole American Nightmare thing came to be,” Rhodes said.
Rhodes acknowledged that high-profile interference has become part of his biggest moments, referencing figures such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
“If you’re going to be in the big moments, you have to be ready for the big jobs,” he added.

Whether Cody Rhodes follows through on the tease remains to be seen, but he is set to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton in the Night One main event of WrestleMania 42 on April 18 at Allegiant Stadium.
