CM Punk reportedly wants another run as a heel in WWE, but believes turning against the fans would be bad for business.
CM Punk has previously spoken about the difficulty of becoming a heel because of the level of support he receives from WWE audiences. Speaking on Self Made Sessions, Self Made Pro claimed that Punk remains interested in playing a villain again despite those circumstances.
“He’d love to be a bad guy again.”
However, the report suggests Punk does not believe now is the right time to make a permanent character change.
“He’d love to be a bad guy again. He’s of the belief that, like, that’s just bad business right now.”
CM Punk May Take On A Heel Role In His Upcoming Match Against Kevin Owens
CM Punk may nevertheless have an opportunity to work as the de facto heel when he faces Kevin Owens for the Undisputed WWE Championship in Toronto. The two rivals had a heated confrontation on the August 14 episode of SmackDown, during which their history dating back nearly two decades became part of the storyline.
Owens brought up their past issues, while Punk responded by criticising Owens for what he viewed as wasted potential and questioning how successful his career would have been if Punk had been around for some of his biggest moments.
With Owens competing in front of a Canadian crowd in Toronto, Punk is reportedly expecting to receive a hostile reaction despite normally being positioned as a babyface. According to Self Made Pro, Punk is fully aware of the likely crowd dynamic and has deliberately approached his recent promos expecting to play the heel against Owens.
“CM Punk is extremely aware that he’s going to be a massive heel in Toronto, and everything he’s done in his promos was done with the mindset of, ‘I’m going to go into Toronto as a bad guy.’”
The situation would allow Punk to temporarily embrace a more antagonistic role without WWE committing to a full heel turn.
CM Punk is currently the Undisputed WWE Champion and remains one of the company’s most popular performers. While he would reportedly welcome the opportunity to become a heel again, his current popularity appears to be one of the primary reasons he believes making that change would not make business sense.
