Santos Escobar has described his WWE release as “heartbreaking” after being let go just days after undergoing a second surgery.
Santos Escobar’s WWE future already seemed uncertain in 2025 as his contract neared expiration. However, a late offer from the company led him to agree to a new deal.
His situation changed the following year considerably. After wrestling twice for AAA, Escobar suffered an injury before WWE released him following WrestleMania 42.
Speaking publicly about his departure for the first time in an interview with TMZ’s Inside The Ring, Escobar admitted the timing made the situation particularly difficult.
“It was a very heartbreaking situation for me personally, ’cause I was injured and I think [the release] was maybe six or seven days after my second surgery, so it was even more heartbreaking,” Escobar said.
Escobar acknowledged that he was not prepared to lose his job, although he believes it would be difficult for anybody to be ready for that situation.

Several months removed from his departure, Santos Escobar said his outlook has improved as he has recovered from his injury and rediscovered his character. His time away from WWE has also allowed him to explore opportunities outside professional wrestling.
“I just wrapped up a television project in Mexico on a major streaming service, and this happened during these three months,” Escobar said.
Escobar explained that his WWE release gave him the opportunity to take part in the project and express himself creatively in a way he had not previously experienced.
“Everything I do, I put my everything on it, and this time, this is pretty much what happened, you know?” he said.
The former WWE star also credited his injury with forcing him to reassess different aspects of his life during a challenging period.
“The injury put me in a situation where I had to dig deep, and work hard, and evaluate everything in my life.”
While Escobar’s WWE departure came at a particularly difficult time because of his injury and surgery, he has since used the months away from the company to recover and pursue new opportunities outside the ring.
