AEW Dynamite delivered a loaded night of championship action, with four title matches and several major developments coming out of the April 29 episode.
The show opened with Excalibur, Tony Schiavone and Taz running down the card before the TNT Championship kicked off the night.
AEW TNT Championship: Kevin Knight vs. MJF
Kevin Knight defended the TNT Championship against MJF in a fast-paced opener that quickly spilled to the floor.
MJF attacked Knight at the bell and sent him crashing into the railing with a powerbomb before mocking him with the camera. Knight fought back with his athleticism, using a series of dives to keep MJF on the defensive, including a slingshot crossbody, a tope and a somersault dive.
Knight appeared to injure his knee after backflipping out of the ropes, and MJF immediately targeted the weakness. The challenger went after the leg with a Half Crab, dragon screws and repeated attacks, but Knight refused to stay down.
MJF tried to use the Dynamite Diamond Ring after distracting referee Bryce Remsburg with the TNT Title, but Knight caught him with a low blow and an inside cradle for the upset win.
Winner: Kevin Knight
After the match, MJF attacked Knight’s knee again until Darby Allin made a dramatic entrance from the top of the arena and laid MJF out with a Scorpion Death Drop.
MJF demanded his rematch for the AEW World Championship, but Allin refused unless MJF put something on the line. Brody King then confronted Allin and Knight, warning Allin that he would not survive the main event and telling Knight that he would be challenging King next week if he won the title.
A video package then aired recapping Allin and King’s brutal rivalry ahead of the main event.
Backstage, Renee Paquette spoke with Adam Copeland and Christian Cage. Cage insisted his fractured arm was fine before accepting FTR’s challenge to make their Double or Nothing match an I Quit match. Copeland pointed out Cage’s poor history in I Quit matches, which led Cage to storm off.
The Brawling Birds vs. Emily Jaye and Jordan Blade
Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor made quick work of Emily Jaye and Jordan Blade.
Hayter came out throwing heavy forearms, while Windsor added chops and ringside offence. The Brawling Birds overwhelmed their opponents with fast tags, a double headbutt and a sandwich lariat before finishing the match with Two Birds One Stone.
Winners: The Brawling Birds
Afterwards, photos aired of Swerve Strickland at the NFL Draft.
Backstage, Thekla and Skye Blue addressed last week’s misting of Persephone by Julia Hart. Blue said it may have been the best thing for Persephone, while Thekla took aim at The Brawling Birds and said she was everything one-on-one, while they were nothing.
AEW International Championship: Kazuchika Okada vs. Ace Austin
Kazuchika Okada defended the AEW International Championship against Ace Austin, with Don Callis joining commentary.
Austin scored an early near fall and used his speed to frustrate Okada, including a handstand escape on the apron. Okada eventually cut him off with a DDT on the floor and began wearing him down, mixing arrogance with precision.
Austin rallied with a Fosbury Flop, a springboard twisting leg drop and several creative counters. He came close with a backslide after ducking the Rainmaker, but Okada quickly recovered, hitting a dropkick, Tombstone and Rainmaker to retain.
Winner: Kazuchika Okada
After the match, Callis moved toward Austin before Mark Davis congratulated Okada. Juice Robinson then ran out to support his Bang Bang Gang teammate, while Konosuke Takeshita appeared on the stage and signalled that he wanted the International Championship at Double or Nothing.
A Western-themed vignette followed, showing Bandido “Most Wanted” signs around town. Swerve Strickland and Prince Nana appeared, with Strickland setting one of the signs on fire.
The show then recapped Jon Moxley’s recent offer to Will Ospreay. In a training segment with the Death Riders, Ospreay arrived and said he had not been cleared, but was still heading to Japan for a title match. Moxley told him he needed to drop anything clouding his vision, including loyalty, anger and emotion. Ospreay accepted, and Moxley shoved the camera away as the Death Riders continued shaping him for his pursuit of the AEW World Title.
Adam Copeland and Christian Cage vs. RPG Vice
FTR and Stokely watched closely as Copeland and Cage faced Rocky Romero and Trent Beretta.
Romero immediately targeted Cage’s injured arm, while Cage responded by flipping off FTR. Copeland and Cage gained control with a quick double-team offence, but Cash Wheeler created enough of a distraction for Beretta to drive Cage’s arm into the post.
Stokely celebrated at ringside, only to find Orange Cassidy, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong behind him. Cassidy hit Stokely with popcorn, triggering a brawl between The Conglomeration, FTR and Stokely that spilled out of the arena.
RPG Vice continued working over Cage until he spiked Romero with a Tornado DDT and tagged in Copeland. Copeland ran wild and hit Beretta with an Impaler, but RPG Vice nearly stole it with a double offence and a foot-on-the-ropes pin attempt.
Beretta argued with the referee, allowing Copeland and Cage to hit a pop-up Spear for the win.
Winners: Adam Copeland and Christian Cage
After the match, Cage ripped apart a chair, and Copeland used part of it in a crossface on Beretta. Cage ordered him to say “I quit,” then mocked him for doing so, saying he would never say the words himself.
A pretaped backstage segment showed Chris Jericho being interviewed by Renee Paquette about Ricochet claiming the Ricosault was an improvement on the Lionsault. Before Jericho could fully respond, The Demand attacked him. Ricochet taunted Jericho, who told him to “eat sh*t, bald,” before Ricochet slammed him into a table and said Jericho was not worth a Ricosault.
AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship: Divine Dominion vs. Hikaru Shida and Kris Statlander
Divine Dominion defended the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championships against Hikaru Shida and Kris Statlander.
Shida attacked at the bell, but Lena Kross and Megan Bayne quickly used their power advantage. Shida and Statlander showed flashes of teamwork, though there was visible tension when Shida kicked Statlander into Bayne as part of an offensive sequence.
Statlander mounted a comeback with a double hurricanrana and later stacked both champions for a 450 Splash, but it was not enough. Shida also came close with a Meteora and Falcon Arrow, but Bayne and Kross eventually flattened her with a double chokeslam to retain.
Winners: Divine Dominion
Backstage, MJF interrupted Renee Paquette’s interview with Don Callis and Andrade El Idolo. MJF blamed Andrade for ruining AEW, while Andrade mocked him by repeatedly asking, “How do you know?” Callis calmed both men and said everyone would be better off with MJF on top.
Rush vs. Steven Fuerte
Rush destroyed Steven Fuerte in a short, brutal match.
Fuerte offered a handshake, but Rush dropped him with a right hand and beat him around ringside before finishing him with the Bulls Horns.
Winner: Rush
After the match, Rush said, “When you mess with the bull, you get the horns.”
Backstage, Renee Paquette interviewed The Opps. Samoa Joe said the group planned to reassert its dominance, praising Katsuyori Shibata, Anthony Bowens and HOOK. Joe said HOOK would become TNT Champion this weekend, then sent a message to Ospreay, saying The Opps had his back when he needed it, and now he had to make a choice.
Stokely later appeared with FTR and said he had a proposition for Orange Cassidy. Next week on Dynamite, Cassidy will face Dax Harwood. If Cassidy wins, he can challenge for the tag titles with any partner. If Harwood wins, FTR can challenge for the Trios Titles with Tommaso Ciampa, who appeared and promised another title win alongside the Top Guys.
AEW World Championship: Darby Allin vs. Brody King
Darby Allin defended the AEW World Championship against Brody King in a violent main event between longtime rivals.
The match opened with a handshake before Allin exploded with a shotgun dropkick. King quickly overpowered him, swatting him out of the air with a chop and launching him with a German suplex.
Allin fought back with an Avalanche Code Red and a top-rope dropkick to King on a chair, but King repeatedly ragdolled the champion. He chokeslammed Allin on the apron, threw him to the floor and drove him through part of the commentary table setup.
Kevin Knight watched from the crowd while MJF was shown backstage as the match grew increasingly brutal. Allin managed to use his speed and recklessness to create openings, including a Code Red on the commentary table and a dive on one leg.
King appeared close to victory after a Tree of Woe cannonball and a huge lariat, but Allin kept kicking out. King then launched him over the top rope, but missed a cannonball and crashed through the barricade.
Allin exposed the concrete at ringside and powerbombed King onto it before hitting a Coffin Drop on the floor. King barely beat the count at nine, but rolled back into two more Coffin Drops, giving Allin the win.
Winner: Darby Allin
After the match, King showed respect to Allin and left him in the ring. Knight applauded from the crowd as commentary confirmed Allin vs. Knight for the AEW World Championship next week, while also noting Knight must first get through HOOK on Collision with the TNT Championship at stake.
