Will Ospreay wants to use his AEW World Title reign to bring a sports atmosphere to the promotion.
At All In London, Will Ospreay defeated Kenny Omega to win the AEW World Championship in an instant classic. After the victory, he returned to his feud with the Death Riders and finally put the rivalry to rest when he defeated Jon Moxley at All Out.
The Aerial Assassin looks set to be a fighting champion, with a title defence against Kazuchika Okada taking place at Grand Slam France, and Andrade El Idolo waiting in the wings to cash in the title opportunity he won at All In.
Before winning the championship, Ospreay told The Extreme Channel that he wants his reign to have more of a sports presentation than AEW Champions of the past.
“I like to look at big boxing main events, like the Conor Benn one that just happened was a huge thing. I feel like my whole thing with wrestling is, I like to put the sports presentation behind it. I feel like there’s matches, like brand new concept matches, that we could really bring to AEW that I’ve kind of thought about, and just something that’s never been done before, it’s just something that I’d love to tease, and I’d love to bring back a little bit more of a sports atmosphere.”
Will Ospreay Wants To Be In Sports-Based Stories And Matches
Will Ospreay went on to claim that he’s one of the best sports-based wrestlers today, and wants to utilize that in his matches and storylines in AEW.
“The World Cup was super inspiring to me. Watching everybody come together, I love the drama of seeing people coming from behind as well. They’re kind of like my points that I would like to put on a title reign if I was ever lucky enough to win tomorrow. For me, it’s just kind of like, what can I do that’s different to all the guys that we’ve mentioned? Honestly, I feel like I’m one of the best sports-based wrestlers in the game today. So put me in sports-based stories and matches.”
On the AEW Dynamite Tribute Pac, Will Ospreay paid tribute to the late star by performing the Black Arrow. Following the show, he said he wanted to do it to let fans see the move one last time.
