A surprising debut of former IWGP Heavyweight Champion EVIL on WWE NXT has led to questions about why the major signing did not start on the main roster.
EVIL made his first appearance on NXT this week rather than debuting on Raw or SmackDown. Given his experience and profile, the move initially raised eyebrows among fans. According to Cory Hays on BodySlam+, the decision was not made by WWE. Instead, EVIL himself requested to begin his run on the NXT brand.
The former IWGP Heavyweight Champion debuted by confronting Tony D’Angelo, presenting him with a symbolic message that suggested a future title challenge before leaving without physical contact.
EVIL’s WWE signing had been confirmed days earlier by PWInsider, following his departure from New Japan Pro Wrestling. His decision to start in NXT now suggests a deliberate approach to his introduction in the company, rather than an immediate move to the main roster.

EVIL’s arrival came during a chaotic segment that also saw Tavion Heights return and Will Kroos debut, creating multiple challengers around the NXT Championship picture. John Cena also reacted to the debut of Will Kroos by posting a tweet referencing a chant that UK fans use for Kroos at shows.
