Shane McMahon has reflected on one of the most memorable matches of his career, marking the 25th anniversary of his brutal King of the Ring encounter with Kurt Angle.
The pair faced off at the 2001 King of the Ring pay-per-view in a street fight that has since become one of WWE’s most iconic and physically punishing matches. Taking to social media, Shane McMahon paid tribute to Kurt Angle and revealed the two had recently spoken about the bout.
“25 Years Ago Today! It was an honor to share the ring with my friend Kurt Angle and so proud that the match has stood the test of time,” McMahon wrote.
He also jokingly suggested revisiting the match more than two decades later.
“We did it all for you then and would do it all over again today….Maybe we should?”
The match is perhaps best remembered for the infamous spot in which Angle repeatedly attempted to suplex McMahon through a glass panel on the entrance set before eventually crashing through it.
Shane McMahon Said He & Kurt Angle Reminisced About Their Iconic Match Over The Phone
Shane McMahon later revealed that he and Angle had reminisced about the match during a phone call and thanked fans for continuing to celebrate it 25 years later.
“I just got off the phone with Kurt, where we reminisced about this match and how proud we both are of it and that it has withstood the test of time,” McMahon wrote. “Thank you all for supporting us both over these many years. You guys are the greatest fans in the world.”
Former WWE referee Mike Chioda, who officiated the contest, also looked back on the match and admitted he feared for his job during the chaotic encounter.
“I thought I was getting fired by Vince that night!” Chioda wrote. “Vince was screaming in the background, ‘Tell Kurt to STOP!’ Shane McMahon proved to the WWE Universe at KOTR he was ready for professional wrestling!!”
The match remains one of the defining moments of both men’s careers and is still widely regarded as one of the greatest hardcore matches in WWE history.
