Sami Zayn is well aware that the odds were stacked against him winning the Undisputed WWE Championship.
At Night of Champions, Sami Zayn reached the pinnacle of WWE when he pinned Cody Rhodes to capture the Undisputed WWE Title in a Triple Threat match that also involved Gunther.
The victory is the culmination of a 24-year career, the past 13 of which Zayn has spent in WWE. While many wrestlers talk about the sacrifices such a long career brings, especially when it comes to family life, Zayn sees his time in wrestling as a privilege.
In a new interview with ESPN New York, Zayn explained that, while his wife might disagree, he has never looked at the things he has done as a “sacrifice.”
“You know, I’ve never really viewed… never really looked at it that way. I know that’s a prevailing narrative, a lot of people talk about that when they talk about our industry, talking about the sacrifices. Like, ok, if you ask my wife, for sure, she would consider them sacrifices.
“You know, leaving the family, leaving the kid, missing birthdays, anniversaries, everything like that. It’s been talked about, I’d say ad nauseam at this point. But the truth is, I’ve just never looked at it that way. It’s just a way of framing it. I’ve never seen it as a sacrifice, I really never have. I view it more of a privilege than anything, honest to god.”
“The Odds Of That Are Insane” – Sami Zayn On Becoming The Undisputed WWE Champion
Zayn also spoke about just how unlikely it was that he would ever hold the Undisputed WWE Title, as he was just one of millions of people who want to be in his position.
“I say this without exaggeration, because right now there’s only one person holding this and it’s me. I say this without any hyperbole, without any exaggeration, there are millions of people in the world who would want to be holding this right now, but there’s only one and it’s me. The odds of that are insane. So, to look at this as anything other than a remarkable experience and a remarkable privilege, I think you’re not seeing this for what it is.”
In another recent interview, Sami Zayn said he isn’t afraid of defending the title against anyone, although he was relieved that Oba Femi decided to forgo his World Title match to challenge Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam instead.
