Rey Mysterio added another major opportunity to his growing list of responsibilities on Monday night, earning a shot at the WWE Intercontinental Championship just days after being named the new on-screen General Manager of AAA.
During Monday’s episode of WWE Raw, Rey Mysterio defeated Rusev to become the number one contender for the Intercontinental Championship currently held by Penta.
Late in the match, Mysterio draped Rusev across the ropes and attempted to connect with a 619. Rusev intercepted the move and dragged Mysterio to the centre of the ring to apply The Accolade, but Mysterio escaped the submission and caught Rusev with a quick schoolboy roll-up to steal the victory.
The attack did not end there. Following the match, Rusev and Ethan Page assaulted Mysterio until Dragon Lee ran to the ring to even the odds. The babyfaces eventually cleared the ring and stood tall.
Penta has held the Intercontinental Championship since defeating Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series: WarGames last November. Earlier in the night on Raw, he successfully retained the title against Je’Von Evans.
Rey Mysterio’s Intercontinental Title History
Rey Mysterio is already a two-time former Intercontinental Champion. His first reign began at WrestleMania 25 in 2009 when he defeated John Bradshaw Layfield, marking JBL’s final singles match. He later regained the title from Chris Jericho in a mask versus title match at The Bash after briefly losing the championship at Extreme Rules.
Since then, Mysterio has challenged for the Intercontinental Championship multiple times without success, most recently during the six-man ladder match at WrestleMania 42, which was won by reigning champion Penta.
