A new report has shed light on how AEW World Champion MJF suffered the knee injury that forced him to withdraw from an upcoming independent wrestling appearance.
On June 4, Beyond Wrestling announced that MJF had been pulled from his scheduled match against Bobby Orlando after suffering a hyperextended knee. The promotion noted that the injury left him unable to compete and travel for the event.
According to Fightful Select, the injury did not occur during the barricade piledriver spot against Rush on last Wednesday’s Dynamite episode, as many fans initially believed.
Instead, the report states that the current AEW World Champion suffered the injury during a corner sequence involving Rush’s running knee strike. The incident was described internally as a “freak accident,” with no backstage blame reportedly being placed on Rush.
Despite the setback, there is optimism regarding MJF’s status.
Fightful reported that AEW expects the world champion to remain on television while the company continues to monitor the severity of the injury. At this stage, there is no indication that the issue will immediately derail his ongoing championship reign.
The injury occurred during MJF’s successful defence of the AEW World Championship against Rush on the June 3 edition of Dynamite.
Who Is Replacing MJF At Beyond Wrestling?
Following Beyond Wrestling’s announcement, Justin Barrasso reported that Andrade El Idolo has been selected as MJF’s replacement for the event. Andrade, who is currently aligned with the Don Callis Family in AEW, will now face Bobby Orlando in Cranston, Rhode Island.
The development comes at a pivotal time for AEW, with MJF currently at the centre of the company’s world title picture heading into the summer months, as the road to All In continues to take shape.
