MJF could be set for a spell away from AEW television following the end of his latest AEW World Championship reign.
The former champion dropped the title to Kenny Omega on last week’s Beach Break edition of Dynamite, ending his third reign after Omega overcame outside interference to capture the championship for a second time.
According to Fightful Select, MJF may not appear at AEW Redemption later this month. The report stated that when sources were asked about MJF’s plans for the pay-per-view, they indicated he could be taking time away from television.
Fightful stressed that nothing has been confirmed, and no timeframe has been given for any potential absence. The report added that there remains an expectation within AEW that the three-time AEW World Champion will be involved in some capacity at All In on August 30, although his exact role has yet to be determined.
MJF lost the championship to Omega on July 8 after Will Ospreay prevented him from using the Dynamite Diamond Ring. Omega capitalised by delivering the One-Winged Angel to begin his second reign as AEW World Champion.
The title change came after the championship match was moved from AEW Redemption to Dynamite. Dave Meltzer previously reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that the bout had originally been scheduled for Redemption and that MJF was believed to have pushed for it to take place on television instead, with AEW President Tony Khan approving the change.
Fightful Reports That MJF Wanted To Drop The Title To Kenny Omega On Dynamite
Fightful Select has also reported that within AEW, there was a belief that MJF advocated for the switch, while noting that plans for Kenny Omega to regain the AEW World Championship had reportedly been in place for several months.
AEW Redemption takes place on July 26 in Montreal, while All In is scheduled for August 30 at Wembley Stadium in London.
