John Cena may be retired from the ring, but there is one aspect of professional wrestling he still misses every day.
Speaking during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 17-time world champion reflected on life after his in-ring career ended and revealed the aspect of wrestling that has been hardest to leave behind.
John Cena said the connection with fans remains unlike anything else he has experienced.
“What I miss is the audience, the energy,” Cena said. “I had to walk away because I can’t get body-slammed anymore. It was time.”
The comments come six months after Cena wrestled his final match, bringing an end to one of the most successful runs in WWE history.
Cena’s farewell match took place on December 13, 2025, when he faced Gunther in the main event of Saturday Night’s Main Event at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The WWE Hall of Famer tapped out to the Ring General, closing the book on a career that spanned more than two decades.
The retirement followed a year-long farewell tour that began in January 2025. During that run, Cena remained one of WWE’s central figures and added several memorable moments to his legacy, including a shocking heel turn at Elimination Chamber and capturing a record-setting 17th world championship at WrestleMania 41 Night Two.
John Cena Is Still Involved With WWE Despite Reitring From In-Ring Competition
Although his days as an active competitor are over, John Cena remains involved with WWE.
Prior to his retirement match, Cena signed a five-year extension with the company, allowing him to continue serving as a WWE ambassador. The agreement ensures that one of the promotion’s most recognisable stars will remain connected to the organisation even after stepping away from in-ring competition. Cena most recently served as the host of WrestleMania 42 and also appeared at Backlash to announce the John Cena Classic Tournament.
While Hollywood, television, and other ventures continue to occupy much of his schedule, Cena’s latest comments make it clear that the atmosphere created by a live WWE crowd is something he still misses.
