John Cena has responded to the mixed reaction surrounding the newly announced John Cena Classic following its reveal at WWE Backlash.
The concept, introduced as a new crossover competition involving both WWE and NXT talent, with fan voting playing a major role, immediately sparked debate online. While some fans praised the idea, others questioned how the format would actually work.
A day after Backlash, John Cena addressed the criticism directly on social media and admitted the project is still evolving behind the scenes.
“The John Cena Classic may not be perfect by any means yet it’s authentically me,” Cena wrote. “I’m aware that there is the risk it might be a total failure and I’m not afraid of that.”
Cena explained that although his in-ring career has ended, he still wants to contribute to WWE by helping create opportunities for younger talent.
“My ‘why’ in WWE is to consistently be as useful as possible for as long as possible,” Cena wrote. “With my in-ring career at an end, my ‘why’ is to use whatever energy or relevance I have left in hopes to create a launchpad of opportunity for all talent to show their skills.”
He also admitted WWE is still finalising parts of the concept, adding:
“More details to come as we figure all this out!”
When Will The John Cena Classic Start?
So far, WWE has not officially confirmed when the John Cena Classic will begin, although the project appears set to become a major crossover initiative between WWE and WWE NXT.
