John Cena has once again insisted that his in-ring wrestling career is over, saying he has no plans to return for even a one-off match.
Speaking on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, John Cena addressed ongoing speculation about a possible WWE comeback and made it clear that he believes it is time to step away permanently from active competition.
“In-ring performance, I will not fall down again,” Cena said. “I’m 49, I have given my physical best to WWE.”
Cena explained that he never wanted to continue wrestling beyond the point where he could no longer perform at the standard fans expected.
“The product is so fast, and time’s undefeated,” he continued. “Rather than hang around and put out a product that I feel might be less to our consumer, I made a promise to our fans.”
Cena then referenced comments he made earlier in his career about knowing when it would be time to retire.
“When I’m a step slower, it’s time to go,” Cena said. “That’s happened, and it’s time to go.”
Cena officially retired from in-ring competition following his loss to Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025.
John Cena Has Remained Part Of WWE’s Programming Despite In-Ring Retirement
Despite retiring from wrestling matches, John Cena has remained heavily involved with WWE programming. He hosted WrestleMania 42 earlier this year and later appeared at Backlash to announce the launch of the John Cena Classic.
Cena’s current WWE agreement also reportedly includes a behind-the-scenes role involving developmental talent scouting and promotional work for WWE’s Club WWE service.
