A former WWE star has revealed that renewed attention surrounding his controversial character once cost him a major job opportunity in education.
Marc Copani portrayed Muhammad Hassan during a controversial WWE run in 2004 and 2005 before leaving professional wrestling and pursuing a career in education. Speaking on Developmentally Speaking with Bryan Asbury, Copani explained that he later made occasional wrestling appearances while continuing his work outside the industry. However, one appearance brought his wrestling past back into the spotlight and ultimately affected a job application.
Copani said he had successfully completed three rounds of interviews for a significant position and believed he had secured the role before his application went to a board of education for final approval.
“I had gotten this job. I had won the interview rounds, all three rounds, and went to the board of education.”
According to Copani, the situation changed when board members learned of his previous career as Muhammad Hassan.
“Because of that, I actually lost out on a pretty big job,” Copani said.
He claimed that his professional wrestling background overshadowed the career and reputation he had established in education.
“That had become so well known, and then suddenly Marc Copani the educator was suddenly Muhammad Hassan the wrestler.”
Copani said the board rejected his candidacy after learning that he had been a professional wrestler.
“They were like, ‘This guy’s a professional wrestler? No, absolutely not.’”
He added that he was not given an opportunity to discuss the matter with those responsible for the decision.
“They wouldn’t even meet with me.”
Copani believes perceptions surrounding professional wrestling led people to question whether someone with that background could also be a qualified teacher or principal.
Former WWE Star Marc Copani Said His Negative Experience With His Wrestling Past Made Him Move Away From The Sport For A While
The experience prompted him to distance himself from wrestling appearances for a period.
“So I stopped doing everything for a while.”
Marc Copani has since found a more supportive environment within his current school district, which he said has no issue with him making occasional wrestling appearances. He now works as a director of human resources and acknowledged the unusual path his career has taken since portraying one of WWE’s most controversial characters.
“I’m the director of human resources. The irony that I was the most controversial character that got kicked off WWE TV… isn’t lost on me.”
Although Copani occasionally remains involved in wrestling, his primary career remains in education.
