John Cena’s newly announced WWE project may still be in the early planning stages internally.
Following the reveal of the John Cena Classic at WWE Backlash, fans immediately began debating the concept online, with many questioning exactly how the proposed WWE and NXT crossover competition will function. According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer daily update, that uncertainty may stem from WWE itself reportedly still finalising the format.
“Regarding the details of the John Cena Invitational, we were just told today that this is a work in progress,” Meltzer reported.
According to the report, WWE wanted to move ahead with the Backlash announcement before fully deciding on the project’s structure. Meltzer added that current online speculation regarding tournaments, match formats or how champions may be crowned is largely guesswork at this stage.
“They wanted to make the announcement but as far as what it is, that is not decided,” Meltzer stated.
John Cena Addresses Fan Backlash To Classic On Social Media
The report comes shortly after John Cena himself addressed the mixed fan reaction surrounding the announcement on social media. Cena admitted the concept is still evolving and acknowledged that it may not work out as planned.
“The John Cena Classic may not be perfect by any means yet it’s authentically me,” Cena wrote. “I’m aware that there is the risk it might be a total failure and I’m not afraid of that.”
The former WWE Champion also explained that his current focus is on helping create opportunities for younger talent rather than extending his own in-ring career.
“My ‘why’ is to use whatever energy or relevance I have left in hopes to create a launchpad of opportunity for all talent to show their skills,” Cena said, later adding: “More details to come as we figure all this out!”
At the moment, WWE has yet to announce an official launch date or specific format for the John Cena Classic.
