AEW dedicated Wednesday night’s special three-hour edition of AEW Dynamite to the memory of Ted Turner, following news of his passing at the age of 87.
Before the show aired from North Charleston, South Carolina, AEW released a statement honouring Ted Turner’s influence on professional wrestling and television history.
“AEW mourns the loss of Ted Turner and sends our condolences,” the company wrote. “A pioneer of TV and founder of TBS & TNT, Turner championed pro wrestling on his networks since the 1970’s. AEW proudly continues that tradition, and we dedicate Wednesday Night Dynamite tonight on TBS to his memory.”
How Did AEW Pay Tribute To Ted Turner On Dynamite?
The tribute episode aired as a combined Dynamite and Collision special on TBS. During the broadcast, Tony Schiavone and Sting both paid tribute to Turner and reflected on his contributions to the wrestling business.
Turner played a major role in wrestling history through his ownership of WCW and his decision to feature professional wrestling programming on TBS and TNT for decades. Nearly 20 years after WCW closed, AEW brought wrestling back to TNT when Dynamite launched on the network in 2019 before later moving to TBS.
Outside of wrestling, Turner founded TBS, TNT and CNN, and previously owned the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Thrashers. Reports stated he had been battling Lewy body dementia prior to his passing.
