A WWE Hall of Famer has questioned the approach to the WrestleMania 42 main event involving Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton.
Speaking on his “My World” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett was critical of the use of celebrity involvement in the match, which saw Pat McAfee in Randy Orton’s corner and Jelly Roll backing Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42.
Jarrett argued that both figures largely acted as “cheerleaders” rather than adding meaningful impact to the bout.
“They stay out of the way, don’t get involved, let the guys fight… have some false finishes where it looks like Pat is almost going to get involved, but he doesn’t do that,” he said.
He suggested the structure would have been stronger if the celebrity elements had been used earlier in the match before being removed, allowing the focus to shift fully onto the in-ring action.
“At the right time, all hell breaks loose, then you can do the table spot, clear the air, get everybody out of the way, and then let those two guys finish it.”
Jeff Jarrett Thinks The Story Of Cody Rhodes Vs. Randy Orton At Mania Hurt Rhodes’ Presentation
Despite Cody Rhodes retaining the Undisputed WWE Championship, Jeff Jarrett believes the execution ultimately hurt the presentation of the champion.
“I thought the way they started, it pulled the rug out from under Cody,” he added.
The match drew mixed reactions from fans, with some feeling the emphasis on celebrity involvement took attention away from the long-standing history between Rhodes and Orton.
