Trick Williams captured his first main roster championship after defeating Sami Zayn in a high-profile clash at WrestleMania 42.
The bout, which took place on night two, saw a clear shift in character dynamics, with Trick Williams presented as the fan favourite while Sami Zayn leaned further into his recent change in attitude. That shift was evident early, as Zayn targeted rapper Lil Yachty, who accompanied Williams to ringside, attacking him in an attempt to gain an advantage.
Despite the distraction, Williams remained composed as the match built towards its closing moments. Zayn looked to finish the contest with the Helluva Kick, but Williams countered at a crucial moment, connecting with the Trick Knee to score the pinfall and secure the United States Championship.
The victory marks Williams’ first title win since moving to WWE’s main roster, capping off a steady rise that has seen him transition into one of the company’s emerging names.
Trick Williams Celebrated His First Main Roster WWE Title Win With His Parents At WrestleMania 42
Following the match, Trick Williams celebrated at ringside with his parents in an emotional moment before returning to the ring to continue the celebration alongside Yachty.
Zayn’s defeat continues a difficult run that has been unfolding in recent months. After falling short against Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble, Zayn had shown signs of frustration, increasingly vocal about his lack of success compared to others on the roster.
That frustration appeared to boil over in the weeks leading up to WrestleMania. Zayn had previously regained the United States Championship in controversial fashion, pinning Carmelo Hayes after interference and a Helluva Kick during a chaotic rematch scenario. The situation led to Nick Aldis confirming that Zayn would defend the title against Williams on the WrestleMania stage.
The rivalry also took a more personal turn on the final SmackDown before the event. Williams mocked Zayn by referring to him as a “gingerbread man”, prompting Zayn to respond by delivering a Helluva Kick to a gingerbread man during the segment.
