Tony Khan has explained why he trusts Darby Allin with his high-risk wrestling style.
Darby Allin is one of the biggest risk-takers in professional wrestling. The AEW World Champion has done everything from getting thrown onto the entrance ramp in a body bag, getting dragged behind a car, and even being thrown down concrete stairs.
While Tony Khan has been criticised for not putting more boundaries on Allin’s stunts, the AEW President has told ESPN that he trusts that the star respects the danger he puts himself in. However, there was one spot that did make him question Allin, when he dove from a ladder through a plate of glass balanced on chairs in Sting’s final match.
“I do believe in letting the wrestlers live their lives because wrestling is the only sport that goes 52 weeks a year with no offseason. If a wrestler comes to me and they want to do something outside of the ring, usually it’s trying to slow down and spend time with their family … not necessarily something that brings the element of more physical danger into their lives.
“But I trust Darby because his risks are calculated and he respects danger. Except that time with Sting when he went through the glass. That’s the only time I questioned if he respected the risk he was taking.”
There have been other times that Khan had to turn down a pitch from Allin, including when he wanted Sammy Guevara to hit him with a car during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Khan, that was due to the limited roster that was available during that period.
“I couldn’t afford to have him get hurt at that time.”
Darby Allin Set To Defend AEW World Championship Against MJF
Assuming he defeats Mike Bailey on this week’s edition of Dynamite, Darby Allin will make his eighth defence of the AEW World Title at Double or Nothing in a rematch against MJF. In an added wrinkle, to get Allin to agree to the match, Friedman had to agree to put his hair on the line.
As well as the World Title match, the event on May 24th will feature the Owen Hart Cup Quarter Final matches, the return of Stadium Stampede, and FTR defending the Tag Team Championship against Christian Cage and Adam Copeland in an ‘I Quit’ match.
