Seth Rollins says his SummerSlam match against Roman Reigns was a “core moment” of his career.
In the main event of SummerSlam Sunday, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins brought a major chapter of their rivalry to a close. The two had been locked in a years-long feud after Rollins attacked Reigns with a chair, ending The Shield in 2014.
On the latest edition of ESPN New York, Rollins said that history with The Shield meant there was a lot of pressure to meet the expectations of fans with the match.
“I think it was a core moment in my career. I think it really put a stamp on the last decade or more of what WWE has become. From when The Shield came in in 2012 to now as we’re starting to transition out of our era into whatever the next generation is going to be. I think it really kind of put a stamp on that.
“That was a lot of pressure going in, we’re missing one of our core guys in Mox, who’s over in AEW. I think that when it’s just the two of you who’ve been here and not left and kind of went through all of the bad times to get to the good times, there’s a lot of pressure to do that story and the fan expectation. I felt really proud of the fact that we were able to do that and I think deliver what our audience really enjoyed.”
In the end, Rollins thinks the match was a success, crediting his chemistry with Reigns in making it a closing chapter for the whole Shield story.
“Roman is one of the best there is and we’ve always had a tremendous chemistry, whether we’re on the same side or against each other. I came out of it feeling really really good. Happy to have that one done. We started with a bang, we had a lot of great moments in the middle and that felt like a nice kind of closing chapter to see what the next one is going to be.”
Will Seth Rollins Face Roman Reigns In WWE Again?
While one major chapter has closed, Seth Rollins didn’t rule out having more singles matches against Roman Reigns. He explained that with both of them being in their prime and in the main event scene, it was likely they would face off again.
“I don’t know that that’s the case. I think it closed the loop on The Shield, the betrayal story. I felt it allowed both of us, our characters, to move in different directions. So, we’re not tethered to that chair shot from 12 years ago. We can take the characters, and we have over the years, but there’s always been that through line. Now, it feels like that’s, for better or worse, complete.
“I’m 40, Roman is 41. We still got time. We’re still in the prime of our careers, so never say never. I think you could always come back to it, I don’t think either of us are going anywhere from the top of the card anytime soon. As long as there are titles to be won and legacies to be made, I can see it happening again.”
While Roman Reigns is a regular feature of WWE TV as the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, Seth Rollins is currently on hiatus but is expected to return in the near future.
