WWE is not forcing WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley to forfeit the title as they have others in the past.
On Smackdown, Raw GM Adam Pearce announced that although Ripley is close to returning but will not be able to compete at SummerSlam.
“We have made the decision to crown an interim champion WWE Women’s Champion,” said Pearce.
Raw and Smackdown will host qualifying matches to determine which five women will compete in a ladder match at SummerSlam to be crowned the interim champion.
“When Rhea does return to competition we will find out who the one and only WWE Women’s Champion is and that is official,” said Pearce.
Rhea Ripley is currently out with a slight tear in her meniscus. A slight meniscus tear typically takes 4 to8 weeks to heal with conservative treatment (rest, physical therapy, and gradual return to activity), although recovery can take 2 to3 months or longer if the tear is in an area with poor blood supply or if the knee remains painful or stiff.
