WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio has admitted that retirement has crossed his mind, but the legendary luchador does not currently feel ready to end his in-ring career.
Rey Mysterio, who has been wrestling professionally since the 1990s, discussed his future during a recent appearance on What’s Your Story? With Stephanie McMahon. At 51 years old, Mysterio remains active in WWE while also serving as General Manager of AAA.
His comments come after several major names have stepped away from the ring over the past year. John Cena retired in late 2025, while Hiroshi Tanahashi and AJ Styles followed in early 2026. Brock Lesnar also announced his retirement following WWE SummerSlam 2026.
Despite that trend, Mysterio said his body has not yet given him an indication that it is time to stop.
“Most recently, I have been battling with, is it getting close to my time to retire? I certainly don’t feel like I am. Like, my body is saying, ‘Okay, now it’s time,’ and I always like to listen to my body. I am enjoying the position of being AAA GM and seeing young rising stars come up in the game. But at the end of the day, it’s like, man, I really enjoy what I do on every level.
Obviously, I enjoy wrestling a lot more than being behind the cameras. But I do understand that opportunities are very little, and there’s others that are going to come before me right now because it’s time to give the spotlight to other superstars, especially in the lucha libre world. So I am okay with that,” Mysterio said.
Rey Mysterio Says His Retirement Will Not Involve A Retirement Tour
While Rey Mysterio continues to enjoy competing, he acknowledged that his eventual decision to retire may not come with a lengthy countdown or predetermined date.
“I think as far as tapping out, never say never, but it can just pop up one day, just out of nowhere, and say, ‘Okay, now it’s time,’” the WWE Hall of Famer finished.
For now, Mysterio appears comfortable balancing his responsibilities as AAA General Manager with his continued in-ring career, while remaining prepared to listen to his body when the time eventually comes to step away.
