A recently released WWE star could already be edging closer to a move elsewhere following the latest round of WWE roster cuts.
Santos Escobar is expected to resume discussions with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre after his departure from WWE, with the promotion having previously anticipated his arrival. According to Fightful Select, sources indicated CMLL had believed Escobar would join them when his previous WWE deal expired last year, with potential appearances for AEW also discussed. However, WWE ultimately retained him with what was described as a strong contract offer.
That situation has now changed, with Escobar among the 25 wrestlers released on April 24 following WrestleMania 42. He is expected to become a free agent once his 90-day non-compete clause expires.
Santos Escobar’s Limited Final WWE Run
Santos Escobar’s final run with WWE was limited, despite the reported value of his deal. He was primarily utilised in AAA rather than on main roster television, with only brief backstage involvement at select events.
Following an appearance at the Rey de Reyes 2026 event, Escobar revealed he had undergone a second triceps surgery, adding a complication to his exit. WWE is said to expect him to be close to ring-ready by the end of his non-compete, although he will not be permitted to use the Performance Center for rehabilitation following his release.
