A new report has shed light on recent activity surrounding Lucha Underground, including the status of the promotion’s extensive video library.
Interest in Lucha Underground was renewed several weeks ago when the promotion’s social media accounts posted a cryptic teaser, while its website hinted that live events could potentially return in the future. According to Fightful Select, the promotion’s content library remains under the control of Amazon and MGM, which hold a controlling interest in the brand. While there has been speculation regarding potential outside involvement, including theories linking WWE or AEW to recent developments, no such connection has been confirmed.
The report noted that a source close to AEW believed WWE’s involvement was possible, though there is currently no evidence to support that claim.
Fightful further reported that Amazon and MGM are satisfied retaining ownership of the Lucha Underground library. Despite inquiries from interested parties over the years, the companies have reportedly shown little interest in selling the collection.
Why Was There A Recent Social Media Buzz Surrounding Lucha Underground?
The update also clarified the reason behind the recent social media activity. According to the report, the teasers were designed to generate interest ahead of the launch of a new YouTube channel featuring Lucha Underground content.
Originally airing between 2014 and 2018, Lucha Underground developed a passionate fanbase thanks to its unique blend of professional wrestling, cinematic storytelling, and lucha libre influences. The promotion helped elevate the profiles of numerous stars who later found success in WWE, AEW, and other major wrestling companies.
For now, there is no indication that the Lucha Underground library will be changing hands, but fans can expect classic content from the promotion to become more accessible through its upcoming YouTube presence.
