There is growing concern about the condition of AEW World Champion MJF after the star reportedly sustained a legitimate knee injury during this week’s Dynamite episode.
MJF successfully retained the AEW World Championship against Rush on the June 3 edition of the show, but the victory appears to have come at a cost. According to reports, MJF hyperextended his knee during the match and has subsequently been forced to withdraw from a scheduled appearance for Beyond Wrestling, where he was set to face Bobby Orlando on June 5.
Beyond Wrestling confirmed that the three time AEW World Champion was not medically cleared to compete or travel and announced that the match would be postponed. The promotion added that the AEW World Champion intends to make up the appearance at a later date when his schedule allows.
The injury is reportedly legitimate, although there is optimism that it will not result in a lengthy absence. Wrestling Observer’s Bryan Alvarez addressed the situation on social media, stating that MJF’s injury is real but that those involved are hopeful it is not serious.
The timing of the setback is noteworthy, as MJF recently indicated that the Beyond Wrestling appearance would likely be his final independent wrestling match in the United States for an “extraordinarily long time.”
Should the injury prove more significant than initially feared, AEW could face uncertainty at the top of the card, with several challengers already positioning themselves for a title opportunity.
Numerous Contenders Made It Clear They Intend To Challenge MJF For The AEW World Championship On Dynamite
On this week’s Dynamite, both Mark Briscoe and Andrade El Idolo made it clear they have their sights set on the AEW World Championship, although MJF quickly dismissed Briscoe’s challenge.
Meanwhile, the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament continues to shape the road to All In. Will Ospreay, Brody King and Swerve Strickland remain in contention, with the eventual tournament winner set to challenge for the AEW World Championship at Wembley Stadium this August.
Kenny Omega also remains a potential threat after many questioned the circumstances surrounding his championship loss to MJF at Dynasty earlier this year.
