LA Knight has reflected on the difficult start to his WWE main-roster run, revealing details of conversations he had with Vince McMahon before being repackaged as Max Dupri.
Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the former United States Champion discussed the transition from his successful NXT persona to the Maximum Male Models storyline, admitting that Vince McMahon wanted him to move away from the character that had made him popular. According to Knight, McMahon instructed him to tone down many of the qualities that defined LA Knight.
“Vince told me before, ‘You’ve got to talk soft. I don’t want you to say or do any of the things that you used to do,'” Knight recalled.
Knight said he believed McMahon was largely unfamiliar with his previous work and the popularity he had built under the LA Knight name.
“If I’m honest, though, he wasn’t familiar with any of it. He didn’t know LA Knight. I think he was told a little bit.”
The 43-year-old also revealed that McMahon had been impressed by a singles match he had with Roderick Strong, but felt his age worked against him in receiving a major push.
According to Knight, McMahon was reluctant to build around a performer approaching 40 years old and instead saw him in a managerial role.
Vince McMahon Instructed LA Knight To “Talk Softer” On The Mic
LA Knight also shared details of an unusual conversation during preparations for his Maximum Male Models debut, when Vince McMahon repeatedly encouraged him to speak more softly during rehearsals.
“That first day of introducing the models, and we’re doing the little rehearsal thing,” Knight said. “He comes down, and he’s like, ‘I need you to talk softer.'”
Knight explained that he felt the presentation called for more energy, given that he was addressing a live crowd, but followed McMahon’s instructions. The former United States Champion then recalled being given a direction he found particularly confusing.
“He goes, ‘Just read me a line from there as softly as you can.’ He’s like, ‘I don’t think you can be effeminate, but try and be effeminate without being effeminate.’ What?”
Despite the rocky start, he eventually returned to the LA Knight character and has since become one of WWE’s most popular stars, regularly drawing some of the loudest reactions on television.
