Kane has explained why he believes his 2003 unmasking was the right move for his WWE character, saying he felt he had reached the limit of what he could accomplish behind the mask.
The WWE Hall of Famer reflected on the memorable moment during an appearance on WWE’s Photo Shoot series, looking back at the June 23, 2003, edition of Monday Night Raw, when he was forced to remove his mask after losing to Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Kane revealed the original plan for his appearance almost looked very different, thanks to a suggestion from longtime WWE executive Bruce Prichard.
“We shaved my head partway because Bruce Prichard thought that was a very unique look of having half a head of hair, and I was like, ‘dude, that’s ridiculous,'” Kane recalled. “So we ended up cutting the rest of it off as well.”
Kane Said He Wanted To Unmask To Be Able To Portray Emotions Better With His Character
While the new look became one of the defining images of Kane’s career, he said the decision to remove the mask was driven by a desire to expand the character emotionally.
“To my mind, I’d gone as far as I could with the mask on. I mean, it adds a lot of mystique to the character. But it also didn’t allow me to use my face to portray emotion, and our business is all about emotion,” he said.
Kane explained that connecting emotionally with the audience is one of the most important aspects of professional wrestling, something he felt the mask prevented him from fully achieving.
“It’s about portraying emotion to the crowd and eliciting an emotional reaction from the crowd. I felt that I was limited in that respect,” he said. “This is what we did.”
The unmasking marked the beginning of a darker chapter for Kane’s character and remains one of the most memorable moments of his WWE career.
