More details have surfaced concerning TV Asahi and CyberAgent buying NJPW from Bushiroad.
NJPW sold for 3.6 billion yen ($22.6 million USD). CyberAgent paid approximately 2.4 billion yen ($15 million USD) reports Gendai Media. CyberAgent also owns the promotions NOAH, DDT and Tokyo Joshi Pro.
TV Asahi and CyberAgent own 46.3 percent stake in NJPW each.
“Bushiroad felt they had reached the limits of how much profit they could make from New Japan Pro-Wrestling, so they had been considering selling it since around last year. That’s when, around February, they approached the upper management of TV Asahi, which has been broadcasting New Japan matches for many years,” a TV Asahi source told Gendai.
Bushiroad approached TV Asahi in around February about buying the company from them.
CyberAgent makes mobile games and is looking to what it can do in the professional wrestling business as far as monetization goes.
“Currently, CyberAgent is focusing on IP business. Professional wrestling is a strong content with potential for overseas expansion. They can broadcast matches on our video streaming service ‘ABEMA’ and charge a fee for it,” reports Gendai saying there might be more inter-promotional matches than ever before in Japan.
