Grayson Waller has a new challenger for his WWE NXT Championship following a chaotic No. 1 contender’s match last night.
Mason Rook has earned a future shot at the WWE NXT Championship after winning a Triple Threat Match on last night’s episode of WWE NXT. Rook defeated Tony D’Angelo and Saquon Shugars in the main event of the September 15 episode of NXT, securing a future championship match against Grayson Waller.
The three competitors entered the match with existing tension following a six-man tag team bout one week earlier. During that match, Rook made a blind tag and scored the winning pin despite D’Angelo appearing close to securing the victory himself.
That rivalry continued from the opening bell, with Shugars initially being sent outside as Rook and D’Angelo battled in the ring. D’Angelo gained the advantage with a spear before diving through the ropes onto Shugars. Rook responded by hitting both opponents with power slams, then took them down with a senton.
Mason Rook Becomes No. 1 Contender For WWE NXT Championship
All three men continued trading offence as the match progressed, with Tony D’Angelo eventually powerbombing Mason Rook and Saquon Shugars simultaneously while they battled on the ropes. D’Angelo later went underneath the ring for a chair, but Shugars took possession of the weapon. Shugars tried to use it as a launchpad, but the chair broke, and Rook capitalised with a superkick.
Several near falls followed. D’Angelo almost pinned Rook following a suplex, while Shugars came close with a backslide before the referee spotted D’Angelo’s foot on the ropes. Shugars appeared to win the match late after hitting D’Angelo with a reverse Frog Splash. However, Tristan Angels pulled the referee out of the ring before the three-count could be completed.
Shugars immediately went after Angels, removing himself from the action and giving Rook an opportunity to capitalise. D’Angelo attempted a suplex back inside the ring, but his back gave out. Rook responded with a Blue Thunder Bomb, then headed to the top rope and connected with a splash for the win.
The result makes Rook the new No. 1 contender for the NXT Championship and puts him in line for a future match against reigning champion Grayson Waller.
