A former WWE referee has no interest in criticising Vince McMahon, crediting him with changing the course of his life.
Speaking with Wrestling Epicenter, former WWE referee and wrestler Danny Davis reflected on his relationship with Vince McMahon and explained why he remains grateful for the opportunities he received throughout his career. Davis acknowledged the controversy surrounding McMahon but said his own experiences have shaped his view of the former WWE boss.
“Without Vince McMahon, I would either be dead or in jail,” Davis said. “Now, I’m not saying Vince McMahon is an angel. I’m just saying that to me, in my life, without Vince McMahon, I would be dead or in jail. I owe a lot of my success to Vince McMahon, and I won’t say anything bad about him for that reason.”
The WWE veteran said McMahon’s influence extended far beyond wrestling, helping him avoid a path that he believes could have ended very differently.
Danny Davis Said Vince McMahon Helped Him Understand The Wrestling Business
Danny Davis also recalled a conversation with McMahon that helped him understand the realities of the wrestling business. According to Davis, McMahon once explained that difficult decisions were not always personal, but were made with the company’s best interests in mind.
“Vince McMahon was a businessman,” Davis said. “He told me once, ‘I’m telling you this not to be cruel but because I have a business that I have to protect.'”
Davis said that approach made sense to him, noting that success in business often requires tough decisions. While the interview covered a variety of topics from his wrestling career, including WrestleMania III, his heel referee run and stories from his time in WWE, it was his comments about McMahon that stood out most.
For Davis, the issue is straightforward. Regardless of the headlines that have surrounded McMahon in recent years, he believes the former WWE chairman gave him an opportunity that changed his life, and that is something he has not forgotten.
