For the first time in his career, Darby Allin can call himself AEW World Champion.
Darby Allin defeated MJF in the main event of the Spring BreakThru edition of AEW Dynamite, capturing the title in front of his home crowd in Everett, Washington.
The match came together under chaotic circumstances. Earlier in the night, MJF claimed he was unaware of the scheduled defence despite the bout being announced following Dynasty. He refused to compete, citing injury and threatening legal action, before Bryan Danielson confirmed the match would take place in the main event, warning MJF he would be stripped of the championship if he did not defend it.
When the match finally got underway, it proved to be brief but decisive. MJF struck first with a low blow, only for Allin to respond in kind before taking control of the bout. Allin then delivered four consecutive Coffin Drops before finishing the match with a side headlock takeover, echoing the finish of their 2021 encounter, this time in his favour.
Sting Makes Surprise Appearance For Darby Allin Vs. MJF Main Event
Ahead of the match, Sting made a surprise appearance to support Darby Allin, telling him it was no longer “showtime” but “his time.” Sting later joined the post-match celebration, alongside the AEW locker room, as confetti filled the ring.
Allin earned the title opportunity by defeating Andrade El Idolo at Dynasty, while the loss ends MJF’s second AEW World Championship reign, which began at Worlds End in December and included seven successful defences.
