Cody Rhodes says his Undisputed WWE Championship win was the greatest moment of his career, and says the match was important for the company as a whole.
At WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes “finished his story” by ending Roman Reigns‘ historic title reign and capturing the championship his father, Dusty Rhodes, was never able to hold.
During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Rhodes named that victory as the greatest moment of his career, saying it was the most “real” story he could have told.
“It has to likely be WrestleMania 40, because capturing the WWE Championship is probably the most real story I could possibly tell in sports entertainment and pro wrestling that blends fact and fiction because it was the title that my dad never won and was so close to winning. And I really thought it was out of my hands by the time I’d come back to WWE.”
Reflecting on the moment, Rhodes realised that most of the people who celebrated with him in the ring had turned on him over the last few years, something that has fuelled much of modern WWE.
“To be able to hold it up and hand it to my mom. It’s also lingering today because everybody who put me on their shoulders and celebrated, almost all of them have turned on me at this point. So like all modern WWE spins out of WrestleMania 40 and that has to be the best moment in my career.”
Cody Rhodes “Bragaddocious” About WrestleMania 42 Injuries
More recently, Cody Rhodes defeated Randy Orton to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 42. However, The Viper got the last word, attacking Rhodes post-match and leaving him a bloody mess in the ring.
Rhodes has now revealed that, as well as his eye being swollen shut, he needed staples in the back of his head and stitches in the front. However, he is proud that he was able to get back in the ring the following week, and says he is “built different.”
