Glasgow Boys on Top.
The meaning behind it is quite simple for new MLW Southern Crown champion Joe Coffey. In a recent interview with SlamWrestling,net, the Scottish bruiser shed light on his mindset whenever he wins a championship:
“I’m terrible for never taking it in the moment. I’m always on to the next thing. ‘What can I do with this?’ But I think, if you look at anyone in any type of sports, every title means something. It’s what you do with with that title as well to make it meaningful.”
While happy for himself, he had strong positive words for Trevor Lee, whom he beat for said title:
“I can’t tell you how how great a professional wrestler he is! It was an absolute pleasure to be in the ring with him. We were obviously good in previous promotions beforehand but I never got the chance to to work with him. I would love to wrestle him again.”
There’s an unsatisfied hunger Coffey possesses. He’s not shy about it, either:
“I want the boys [Mark Coffey and Wolfgang] to get the tag titles … The heavyweight world title, I see Killer Kross. He’s someone I’ve never had the chance to get in there and mix it up with. We love that as well. I want one of us to win the battle riot. Then I want to circle about, and I want someone else. Maybe Mark will take the Southern Crown off me. Maybe Wolfgang will go [after it]. I just want as as many marquee matches as possible.”
“I would like the GBOT to be standing tall at the end of the calendar year in MLW and doing what we do and what we’ve always done, and that’s go for big scores. I would like to see Mark and Wolfgang with those Tag Team championships, or either different singles championships around their waists. Then we can have the monopoly on it.”
A key part of that hunger is the curiosity and eagerness to learn more, regardless of the decades of experience Coffey has. After a momentary pause, he spoke reflectively:
“if you think you know what all this job is, it’s probably time to stop because you never stop learning.”
ALways eager for a new challenge, there are a number of names Coffey would relish getting in the ring with, whether again after many years, or first-time matches:
“Like guys from CMLL and even the women from Stardom and New Japan as well. There’s so many different people. I’ve had a little experience in Japan before I was with WWE, and it was really good. But there’s so many, even AEW. Look at guys like Ospreay, just unbelievable. You know, I wrestled Will years and years ago. Not the Will Ospreay that you see now. He’s just fantastic. Kyle Fletcher as well. I think he’s really good, and again, got to wrestle Kyle years and years ago. But it’d just be good to get back in because everyone has so much more knowledge and experience. WWE, Randy Orton. He’s he’s one of the pinnacles of pro wrestling, and just like everything he does means something.”
After a brief pause, another name came to mind. One name that Coffey made sure to give extra emphasis to:
“This one that has always escaped me, and we’re very good friends as well. Jonathan Gresham.”
“Seeing any promotion, whether it be Canada or America, me and you need to do battle, man, because it’s been a long time coming. We’ve stayed in each other’s places. We’ve lived in and out of each other’s pockets in Japan.”
Coffey praised Gresham’s technical wrestling and was more than intrigued at the thought of a match with his long-time friend.
In the mean time, COffey has his focus on the collective and individual success of all three of the Glasgow Boys and MLW is on notice.
