AEW Dynamite: Classics, Devils, and Promo. Oh, My!

It’s Wednesday night and you know what that means?

No, you don’t get to be a dictator for a day. It’s AEW Dynamite and they are going hard into the Continental Classic, plus we’ll hear from Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho of The Golden Jets and The Von Erichs are in the building.

But first a quick…

(Author’s Rant:  I wanted to be detailed in what happened on this show.  I really did.  But certain entitled people at my regular job prevented that from happening.  Therefore, this will be an abbreviated recap, so excuse the lack of detail.)

We join you from the College Park Center in Arlington, TX. Excalibur, Taz, and Tonya Schiavone have the call, and Samoa Joe strolls out to start things off, and he wants answers. He promised MJF to keep him whole so he can beat him for the AEW championship at The World’s End PPV. But last week he saw the Devil and his handiwork, and the beer bottle smells of Stetson and disappointment, and apparently a certain Hangman was missing.

Cue Adam Page and he walks to the ring to confront Joe’s accusations and wants him to say it to his face. He says he’s not a detective, but an executioner.

Then…

“SOMOAAAAA….Joe.” Roderick Strong comes down the ramp and tells him to listen to his “young boy” Page. He gives facts that anyone who comes to MJF’s aid gets attacked. It’s always Max, but Page punches him in the neck (that dastard!). So now the first match is….

“Hangman” Adam Page vs. Roderick Strong (with Matt Taven and Mike Bennett)

To keep it brief, Strong and Page go back and forth, and The Kingdom interferes at every opportunity.  At one point, Taven tries to interfere and Page fends off The Kingdom with a moonsault to the floor to wipe them out.  The Buckshot lariat gets blocked and Page attempts an inside cradle for a two count.  However, the Dead Eye finds the target and Page claims the win.

Your Winner via Pinfall:  “Hangman” Adam Page

Next is Blue League action between…

Brody King vs. Andrade El Idolo

This is brute force versus lucha tranquilo.  El Idolo uses his high flying to counter King’s brute force, and at one point he climbs up top but King catches him. They battle up top but El Idolo nails King with a hammerlock DDT on the exposed turnbuckle and a second one puts him down for good.

Your Winner via Pinfall:  Andrade El Idolo

Idolo earns three points for a total of nine in the Blue League.

Renee Paquette is backstage with The Von Erichs. Orange Cassidy wanders in and asks Marshall and Ross if they’ll tag in, and they say yeah.

I almost want to watch Rampage again.

Almost.

Now we hear from Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho. The Golden Jets talk about Big Bill and Ricky Starks and how they tried to injure them and put them on the shelf. The love fest gets interrupted and Starks and Bill state that Jericho is untrustworthy.

Omega comes back with there are less trustworthy factions like The Firm and his alliance with MJF was flaccid. You could even say the stable was a little…Sawft.

Ooooooh…..BURN!

Starks gets back on track and notes he beat Jericho in January (twice, as Bill notes) and they are the best tag team without a name. Jericho and Omega want to help and give them names like…

The best quote of the night is when Jericho says Starks is just a “better dressed, less charismatic version of Enzo Amore.”

Ohhhhh…Double Burn!!

Starks then lays out the challenge that they face them for the AEW Tag Titles at World’s End, and Omega and Jericho accept. So goodbye and goodnight. Ba-Bang and Ba-Bang.

“Timeless” Toni Storm joined at commentary for the women’s action with…

Ruby Soho vs. Riho

The match is mostly moments where we get Storm in Black and White.  However, Soho gets No Future for a two count, but Rico secures the pin with running double knees for the pin and the win.

Your Winner via Pinfall:  Riho

Welcome back, Rihio,  Good luck facing the Timeless One.

Now back to your regular Continental Classic with…

Rush vs. Jay Lethal

Rush’s left leg is taped up but makes no difference.  Rush takes it to Lethal and feigns the Bulls Horns to stay Tranquilo.  There’s a powerslam for a two count by Rush, and it is countered with a Lethal Combination for a count of two.  Rush throws Lethal into the turnbuckles and goes for the Bulls Horns but is stopped by a superkick from Lethal.  He attempts the Lethal Injection, but Rush locks in a sleeper hold and he taps out.

Your Winner via Submission: Rush

That’s three more points for Rush, and Lethal is understandably dejected after his loss.

But let’s continue the Continental Classic with…

Jay White vs. Mark Briscoe

This is a brutal match as White tries to stop the Sussex County native.  There’s a Lariat for a two count by Briscoe, and he is on fire as he sends White out to the floor and lands a big elbow.  Briscoe sends him back in the ring and nails him with a Razor’s Edge powerbomb for another two count, and he signals the Jay Driller.  White blocks it and he connects with a flash dragon screw and then a sleeper suplex to Briscoe.  He signals the Blade Runner, but Briscoe retaliates with a Saito suplex and goes up top for the froggy ‘bow.  White gets the knees up and then delivers the Blade Runner for the pin and the win.

Your Winner via Pinfall:  Jay White

Now we get to the Main Event of the Continental Classic between…

Swerve Strickland vs. Jon Moxley

This was just a brutal match from the start, and neither man gave an inch.

Strickland connects with a flying European uppercut to Mox’s back but he returns the receipt with a cutter for a two count.  He follows with a delayed Gotch-style piledriver to Strickland for a count of two, and attempts to capitalize but a rolling flatliner followed by a delayed vertical suplex by Strickland lays him out.  He covers Mox but he kicks out at two.  Strickland then takes a page from the Blackpool Combat Club with hammer and tong elbows  to his neck, and he climbs up the top turnbuckle but gets pushed off by Mox

Mox goes to a choke and then transitions to an armbar, but Strickland makes it to the ropes to break the submission hold.  Then Strickland nails a double stomp to Mox as he sits on a chair and then does the same finisher in the ring for a two count.  All looks to be in Strickland’s favor until Mox rolls him up for the pin in one, two, and three.

Your Winner via Pinfall:  Jon Moxley

This is a big win, as Strickland is left dumbfounded.  Before we can dive into the ramifications, we see Adam Page battling Devils, and then the Head Devil gestures him in the car as the show goes to credits.
