AEW All Out: CM Punk recaptures AEW Title; MJF returns

Bloody CM

All Out’s main event was originally supposed to be the AEW championship unification match between interim champ Jon Moxley and champion CM Punk. Those plans changed a week and half ago when Mox and Punk put it all on the line on Dynamite. Moxley prevailed. One week later the new champ issued an open contract. After a pep talk from his long time friend and trainer, CM Punk answered the call. And now here we are with Punk as the underdog in his home town.

At the bell, Mox took a seat in the middle of the ring and flipped Punk the bird. Punk chopped Mox into the corner, but the champ reversed and hammered away with shots of his own. Punk connected with a roundhouse kick and followed with knee strikes. He rained down elbows and followed with the GTS. Mox barely kicked out before the three count.

Mox went to the floor to collect himself, but Punk caught him with a suicide dive. The two fought into the crowd. Punk whipped the champ into the ring steps. Mox fought off a GTS and slammed Punk into the ring post, busting him open. Mox licked Punk’s blood off his arm after opening him up even more.

Back in the ring, Mox kicked Punk into the corner before hammering him with mounted punches, focusing on the open wound. Mox invited Punk to chop away at him. They had no effect. Punk countered with a rising knee strike; Mox countered a bulldog with a knee breaker. Jon locked in a Gable grip on Punk’s foot. The champ locked in a single crab and then transitioned into heel hook. Punk gouged at Mox’s eyes to break the hold.  Mox locked Punk in the ropes to deliver a drop kick to the leg. He followed with a dragon screw. Mox locked in a figure four. Punk just flipped him off. The champ hit a piledriver. A drug Punk to the apron, looking for another piledriver. A desperate Punk dropped to the floor and slammed Mox’s shoulder into the apron.

Back in the ring, Moxley ran into a boot and Punk slammed him into the ring post. The challenger locked in the anaconda vice. Mox broke free by biting Punk’s forehead. Mox stomped on Punk’s face. The champ wanted the King Kong lariat, but Punk ducked it. He willed himself to the top turnbuckle and was able to deliver the flying elbow drop, but the champ countered into the bulldog choke. Punk was able to get out with an arm drag. Mox locked in the Bulldog choke again. Punk kicked his way out, so Mox applied an ankle lock. Punk was able to get a rope break.

After a German suplex, Mox flipped off the crowd. Punk connected with a roundhouse kick, but Moxley was able to answer back with a clothesline. Mox dropped out of the GTS. The two traded shots again in the middle of the ring. Punk hit a neck breaker. Moxley blocked the GTS and hit the Death Rider. Punk kicked out at the last moment.

Mox returned to the hammer and anvil elbow strikes. Punk got locked in the Bulldog choke again. Punk was able to pick up Mox and hits the GTS. Punk couldn’t get the pin after dropping to his knees. Punk hit the GTS again and covered for the three count.

After the match, the arena went dark. A voice mail from Tony Khan to MJF played, revealing Khan asked Max to return and be in the Casino ladder match. MJF then revealed himself on video and walked out on stage. Punk held his title aloft in the ring, while MJF flipped off the crowd.

The next AEW PPV is Full Gear on Saturday, November 19th.

AEW All Out
2.5

NOW Arena, Chicago, Illinios

All Out was a very inconsistent show. There were several great matches, looking you Trios Tournament final and AEW Tag team championship match. The main event also delivered.  Although, there should have been an audible called to have the Acclaimed capture their first title. And then there were matches that should have been on Dynamite or even Rampage; looking at you House of Black. The Casino ladder match’s ending was saved by the reveal at the end of the show that the mysterious masked Joker was actually MJF. Not that we didn’t figure it out.
