Mike McGuire of Sunday Night’s Main Event spoke with former WWE Head Writer Brian Gewirtz about his new book, There’s Just One Problem…: True Tales from the Former, One-Time, 7th Most Powerful Person in WWE.

During the conversation, which aired on August 21, Gewirtz gave some untold insight into stories like his relationships with Roddy Piper, Vince McMahon, The Rock and more. Also, for the first time ever, Gewirtz was asked about being there for the return of Bret Hart to WWE, and how the reunion with Shawn Michaels and eventual angle with Bret Hart and Vince McMahon was planned for WrestleMania 26.

At the time Gewirtz was a writer with WWE, it was a very different situation than it is now, he noted.

“I was in a very unique position when I started because there were, you know, there’s, I don’t know, two dozen writers now at various levels and writers assistants, there were only two of us when I started,” Gewirtz said on SNME Radio. “So you’re immediately thrust into it with all the main eventers. So you need to make a good impression with them. But also the flip side of that is, you know, all the people who are ascending and in some cases descending up and down the card, i’s kind of like, ‘Oh, Mr. Bigshot has no time for me.'” Gewirtz noted it would be even worse on TV days.

There are the accusations that he was only writing for his friends, said Gewirtz, which he understands. “You can’t just work with the same people over and over and over again. You know, you could definitely still work with them, but you have to expand a little bit too otherwise you risk, you risk what happened to me of being like, you know, playing favorites at the expense of anybody else.”
