Sting wins World title at Fall Brawl

Sting

Sting

WCW presented its annual Fall Brawl PPV from the Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston Salem, NC. This was the first WCW PPV in the post-Eric Bischoff era so you would think the company would learn from its mistakes and go in another direction. No such luck.

Stupid angles, passable work rate and questionable booking characterized this event. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Eddie Guerrero, Rey Misterio Jr and Kidman defeated Vampiro and The Insane Clown Posse. An OK match with some nice moves. KIdman scored the pin on Vampiro after nailing the Shooting Star Press.

The Revolution gave an interview at the Internet booth with Saturn saying they would sweep both of their matches. Of course they didn’t.

Lenny Lane (w/Lodi) defeated Kaz Hayashi with a Full Nelson Slam. Nice to see Hayashi used on a PPV, even if it was to put someone else over.

Sting was interviewed by Gene Okerlund telling Luger not to interfere and that he would beat Hogan on his own.

No Disqualification: The First Family (Brian Knobs, Hugh Morrus, w/Jimmy Hart) defeated The Revolution (Shane Douglas, Dean Malenko) with Morrus’ No Laughing Matter Moonsault. Jimmy Hart openly interfered in this match, bringing back memories of his glory days in the old Memphis territory. Match ended when Morrus pinned Malenko with No Laughing Matter.

Rick Steiner defeated Perry Saturn with the Steiner Bulldog, to retain the Television Title. So much for going undefeated. Anyway this was a long, stiff match. Saturn hit the Death Valley Driver but Steiner kicked out. Steiner went for his bulldog and scored the pin.

Backstage, Gene Okerlund interviewed Hulk Hogan. Hogan was rambling on about his kids and then vowed to take care of Sting and Luger if he interferes.

Berlyn (formerly Alex Wright) defeated Hacksaw Jim Duggan with a Reversed Neckbreaker. They said Bagwell was a no show so Duggan was subbing for him. OK. Predictably, Bagwell shows up and makes his way to ringside. Really lame angle ensued where he hugs Duggan.

Harlem Heat defeated Kendall and Barry Windham (w/Curt Hennig) to capture the Tag Team Titles. Match had several nearfalls. Finish saw Booker T. nail Kendall with the Missile Dropkick to score the pinfall.

Sid Vicious defeated Chris Benoit with the Powerbomb, to capture the United States Title. Further evidence that WCW still don’t get. Why give the title to a no talent like Sid and take it away from Benoit? Benoit is the guy they should be building the company around. Sid escapes from the Crippler Cross Face and scores the pin with the powerbomb. A poor job of booking.

Goldberg defeated Diamond Dallas Page with the Jackhammer. Towards the end of the match, The Triad come out and cut open Goldberg with a foreign object. He make his He-Man comeback kicking out of the Diamond Cutter and following it up with a Spear and Jackhammer to score the pin.

Sting defeated Hulk Hogan with the Scorpion Death Drop to win the Heavyweight Title. Prior to the match, Bret Hart makes his way out. and puts the bad mouth on Sting and Hogan. Match sees the action go back and forth. Sting nails two straight Stinger Splashes and then goes for a third when Hogan moves. Hogan goes for his leg drop when DDP comes out and interferes. DDP executes the Diamond Cutter and then rolls Sting on top of Hogan. Hogan, surprise surprise, kicks out. Bret comes back down and attacks Page. Sid then comes out and goes for Hogan but the Hulkster dumps him out of the ring. Lex Luger then gets in on the action handing Sting a baseball bat. Sting nails Hogan with the bat and executes the Scorpion Death Drop for the pin and the title.
